CARL FREYER Obituary

FREYER, Carl H. Of Old Greenwich, CT, passed away April 6, 2016 after a brief illness at the age of 77. Born in Arlington, MA, during the hurricane of 1938, he was nicknamed "Windy" by his parents. During his high school years he was captain of the track team and specialized in sprints and hurdles. Upon graduation from Arlington High School in 1956, he did his best to drop the nickname. In 1960 he earned a BS in electrical engineering from Tufts University. He was captain of the track team, a member of the student council and President of Delta Upsilon fraternity. In 1962 he then earned a MBA from Harvard Business School. After serving as an officer in the United States Air Force, Mr. Freyer went to work with Western Electric Corporation and then with Honeywell, Inc. He then began an illustrious career as an entrepreneur, developer and investment banker. At the age of 28, he founded Computer Investors Group (CIG), a computer leasing business and publicly traded company on the American Stock Exchange. He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of CIG. Upon leaving CIG, he founded Freyer Corporation, a financial consulting firm, and he began an extensive run as a real estate developer and investor in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was a managing partner and developer of Mahogany Run, the only golf course on the island. He was general partner and developer of American Yacht Harbor, a marina and retail complex in Red Hook, St. Thomas. He then founded Caribbean Basin Capital Consultants and eventually VILF Consultants, a Virgin Islands based consultancy. At the same time, he was involved with numerous business interests in Connecticut, Florida and New York including membership on several corporate boards of directors, including GTech. He was also part owner of Tracks, a restaurant located in Old Greenwich, CT. An accomplished athlete, Mr. Freyer was one of the top ranked hurdlers in the nation during his high school and college years. For several years, he was a champion sailor, enthusiastic golfer and a member of Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich and served as President, Director and Treasurer. He was a former member of Westchester Country Club as well as Riverside Yacht Club where he was fleet captain. Mr. Freyer was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Anne Freyer of Arlington, MA. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Marina (Kokxhoorn), his son, Carl G. Freyer and his wife Brigid and their children Carl, Jane and Henry of Greenwich, CT; his daughter Krista Mezzanotte and her husband Mark Mezzanotte and their children Luca and Vincent of Carlisle, MA. He is also survived by his brothers, Peter and his wife Linda of Wilton, CT and Stephen and his wife Susan of Danvers, MA. He leaves many nieces and nephews. His grandchildren and the rest of the family continue to call him "Windy." A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, April 15, 2016 at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich located at 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT. My thoughts and prayers go to the entire Freyer family. I will always be thankful to Carl for his friendship and wisdom over the years. He was somebody I could count on for advice even when I did not want to hear it but he always had true concern for those people he cared about and I am proud to have been one of them.

One of the truly memorable people I have been fortunate to come across; what fun times we all enjoyed while involved in the Mahogany Run and American Yacht Harbour projects and in the backgound to those memories I can still hear Carl's resounding laughter.
