Martin R. Fink

FINK, Martin R. 78, son of David and Etta (Checker) Fink, died June 14, 2009 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Needham, MA. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Jacqueline (Klein) Fink, and three sons: Howard (and Deborah, Acton, MA), Andrew (and Mary, Lexington, MA) and Douglas (and Susan, Monroe, CT), and six grandchildren: Caroline, David Joseph, Molly, David Adam, Hannah, and Ethan. Marty was born in New York City in 1931 and recieved his BS and MS from MIT in Aeronautical Engineering. He spent his entire career at United Technologies, resulting in his final position as Chief of Aerodynamics for their Norden Aircraft division until his retirement in 1989. He published numerous papers on hypersonic aerodynamics, powered lift noise and airframe noise and was awarded patents on propeller and turbo blade designs. He was considered an expert on aero-acoustics noise and was called in to consult on such diverse projects as the early Shinkansen bullet trains in Japan and the construction of elevators in the World Trade Center. Marty was an associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aerodynamics and Astronautics as well as past president of his local chapters Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi. He lived for many years in West Hartford and then Fairfield, CT before retiring to Lasell Village in Newton, MA in 2000. A family only graveside service will be held.
