I was sitting at my desk in Laconia, NH putting a battery in my SEIKO clock that your father gave me some 25 years ago. I handled the group insurance for Cambridge Computer and I always dealt with your Dad. We had a great business friendship and I think of him often as I look at my clock. I just found out about his passing as I searched the internet. What a GREAT guy.

Dear Ellen, Rob and Leigh:

We heard the sad news about Herb's passing just this week. We are so sorry for your loss. Herb was one of the kindest man we know and we are priviledged to have called him a friend. Although he was taken from all of us so suddenly and way too soon, memories of his high spirit and energy will live on in our minds forever with fondness, love and respect. I took both my sons to tournaments at Nashua for many years and recall with pleasure seeing Herb at many of them. He performed an invaluable service for junior tennis in New England and for the many young men and women who played at the club. His calm approach and friendly attitude made it a comfortable place to play, and his passing is a great loss.

Dear Rob and family,
Hannah has enjoyed many a tournament at Nashua and I will never forget his comments to Hannah during her first tournaments. They were encouraging and also, emphasized the good sportsmanship that is needed in all sports. The Hoerner family always waited to hear what Herb would say. Also, he faithfully answered his cell phone when I had questions about the tournaments. He was a very special person and will be missed by all!

Dear Rob, Leigh, and Family,
I was so very shocked and sad to hear about Herb's passing. You all are in my thoughts and prayers in this most sad time. I'll always remember Herb fondly. We laughed together about the many funny ways I "tried" to return guys' serves, and he always had encouraging words for my teammates and I of matches well-played. He took an interest in everyone's progress. He always spoke of you both and his whole family with great love and pride. He'll be deeply missed.

Dear Rob and family,
We were so shocked and sorry to hear about Herb's passing. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. Our daughter Veronica played in many of his tournaments over the past 6-7 years and he was always friendly and welcoming to us. We would always joke around, and even though a lot of the tennis events were competetive and tense, Herb maintained his sense of humor and made us laugh. We will carry many fond memories forward and we are certain that his legacy lives on at the NSTC.

Herb brought many people into the tennis arena. He coaxed/prodded me to play in a tournament many years ago and once I started, tennis was really in my blood.

Our latest talks have been about his grandchildren, Ella and Benjamin. If you wanted to see Herb's eyes light up, just ask about them.

WIth Herb, there was never any doubt that he was a true family man. He always talked with pride about all his family. I know that this will be hard times for you and the family to deal with your loss and my prayers are with you. I hope that you will soon see that he will always be with you.

August 15, 2008

Dear Rob and family,

Herb was a true New England tennis "character". I always enjoyed talking with him about NE junior tennis past and present. His committment and love for tennis was appreciated by the Currans and many of the tennis families in New England. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Caren Liebman

August 14, 2008

Rob and Family,
We were so saddened and shocked to learn of Herb's passing. New England Tennis will never be the same without him. Having two sons who competed most of their lives, we spent many snowy weekends in Nashua talking with Herb, sometimes very late in the evening until the tournament was completed. Herb always ran the Jr. Tournaments in such a professional manner and really understood the players and especially how important this was to them. We felt Herb really got to know our children at a young age and watched them mature as players and young adults over the years. He would talk to them about Jr. tennnis, as time went on discuss competing at the collegiate level and just life experiences. At times, we fought through many long snow storms to get to Nashua for the tournaments. It was a large part of all our lives for many years and worth the effort in so many ways. He will be missed but not forgotten. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

August 14, 2008

To the Schachter Family,
We are very saddened by Herb's untimely passing and we send you our deepest condolences. He was such a pleasure to get to know during our many visits to Nashua for USTA tournaments. He always cared about all of the players and was eager to tell stories, listen, and share tennis tips. Sometimes it was hard to know if he was joking or serious. He had such a great dry wit. Nashua tournaments will certainly never be quite the same without his sarcasm and humor keeping us on our toes. We'll miss his presence at the Nashua tournaments, but i will think of him every time I play there.

Next tournament is for you, Herb!

Dear Rob and family,
I was so stunned to hear of Herb's death. He was the staple of NSTC and whenever I went there for a tourtament I would hope Herb was there. I remember the conversations I had with him after matches and before matches. It will be so different playing tourtaments at Nashua now. You will be missed.

August 14, 2008

Dear Rob and family

Herb was a great guy. He was extremely charismatic and a lot of fun to be around. He did a great job of directing the tournaments at Nashua and he made the tournaments an enjoyable experience. Over the many years of playing in Nashua he became a dear friend and we will miss him.

Cindy & Don Ronning

August 14, 2008

We all will miss Herb.
Herb and I talked all the time about Real Estate since I am a NH & MA Broker and he was a MA Broker. He was always asking my opinions and then he would tell me his..

Herb would always joke about my tardiness and sometimes I would surprise him and be on time for Tennis. He would claim a minute late was still late.

We all loved to watch the Kids Tennis Tournaments Herb managed. He was the expert.

Herb also raised his own children well.

Robert Piotti

August 14, 2008

Dear Rob and Family,

Herb knew how to connect with people on a personal level and availed himself as a mentor to many young players. We are grateful to Herb for establishing NSTC as a home for junior tennis in our area. We will miss Herb's sense of humor and his high regard for integrity. Please accept our deepest sympathies.

Herb was a unique person. You don't get to meet too many people like him in a lifetime. I have been playing tournaments in Nashua for many years now. He treated everyone who came to the tournaments with the same rules whether he knew them or not. Just thinking about the jokes he has made over the years makes me laugh. His kindness towards us all was greatly appreciated. He will be missed greatly and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends

August 13, 2008

Dear Rob and family,
We met Herb about 4 years ago, when our son, Ezra, nervously played his first tournament in Nashua. And from the start we knew that he just got "it" right....He conveyed a love for the kids and a proper respect for the game. He helped all of us, kids and parents alike, keep "it" in the right perspective, with his humor, warmth and wit. He was just the perfect role model. New England tennis will never be the same without Herb.
Ezra will be playing in a tournament at Herb's club in Nashua this weekend and next week ,and he wants you to know that he will be playing in Herb's honor. We all send you our heartfelt condolences.

Dear Ellen Robb, Leigh, and Nancy, There are so many words in the English language and they all seem so inadequate at a time like this. For their are none that relieve the pain, shock, and grief, in your loss. We will never forget Herb letting us do Brenda's baby shower at the club, and here came Herb with "Patrick" a four foot stuffed animal for Cameron. That was thirteen years ago and our son still has him in his room. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Scott, Brenda, and Cameron

Margo Boulanger

August 12, 2008

I am totally taken by this sad news.... aside from enjoying watching my boys play tennis, it was always such a pleasure to see Herb in Nashua... Every time we drove there, I wondered out loud to the boys, "I hope Herb is there today"... He just made it all so much fun with his stories and wit. I'm not sure what was more fun - watching my kids play or chatting with Herb!

He also created strong ties with the children that he mentored along the way in their USTA lives. He had a very positive way with the young, teenage tennis players. Junior USTA tennis in New England has lost a very devoted and honorable individual and we have all lost a friend.

Our family sends our most heartfelt condolences to your family. We will miss him dearly. I find myself dreading the next Nashua tournament that my kids sign up for. But, I know that Herb would want us to keep on coming......We will do so in his honor.

To Rob and your family,

Your dad was a classic. Nashua was one of the first USTA tournaments in which Hunter played, starting when he was 9 or 10. For the past 4-5 years, "we" must have played over 20 events there. Over time, we came to know your dad (and you) and appreciate and respect the way he handled players, coaches and parents. He was always completely honest, fair and consistent. No one could doubt that. And he knew the rules, whereas sometimes we parents were just guessing. I enjoyed many conversations with your dad, all of which showed me how much he knew the sport, loved the sport, and enjoyed watching all the kids mature as players and people during their junior tennis years. Both Hunter and I will miss his charismatic style of directing tennis tournaments, which gave us all many laughs and “Herb stories.” New England junior tennis will miss him too.

To Rob and the Schachter Family:
We were deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news. We have such fond memories of Herb, his good nature and humor, and most importantly his integrity, fairness, and respect for all the junior tennis players. Aaron has been coming to Nashua for seven years to play tournaments since he was seven. and has grown to consider it his home away from home. He loved to hang out with Herb in his office, and we appreciate the opportunities that Herb has given him. Robin and I also feel privileged to have known Herb and enjoyed talking with him so many times over the years and observing his special bond with the junior players. He will be missed by all the juniors who have played at N S & T, especially Aaron. Our thoughts are with you and may you be comforted with all the good memories.

William started playing USTA tournaments at Nashua about five years ago, when he was around 10 years old. To us newcomers to the junior circuit Herb was an intimidating tournament director who was very strict with the rules and could be gruff with the players and parents. Over the years, however, we came to appreciate his love of tennis and of the juniors who play the game. The number of times we've been to Nashua, through rain, snow and sleet, made it our home court and Herb a respected and beloved friend. Perhaps the breakthrough came when William won his first tournament there and found that Herb had personalized the trophy with his name. How did he know? Playing tournaments across the region and country also made us appreciate how well Herb (and Rob) ran their tournaments. I guess with so many divisions so many weekends you get pretty good at handling all those kids and parents!

Herb will be missed by us and by many tennis players and their families.
