Edmund Meadows Obituary

MEADOWS, Dr. Edmund C. 90, formerly of Leominster, MA and Manchester, VT, died on July 26, 2011 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, VT after a lengthy illness. Dr. Meadows served as Chief of Surgery at Leominster Hospital from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. Dr. Meadows was born on July 27, 1920 in Dunns, WV, the youngest of nine children of Berman and Dora (Lilly) Meadows. Ed always said that he knew from the time that he was eight years old that he wanted to be a surgeon. Ed achieved that goal by completing his high school education and enrolling at West Virginia Wesleyan College at the age of 14. He graduated from Wesleyan in 1938, earned a Masters Degree from West Virginia University in 1940 and his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1944. Ed served his country in both World War II and the Korean War as an officer in the U.S. Navy. One of the highlights of Ed's naval career was escorting former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on rounds at Bethesda (MD) Naval Hospital. He remarked that "she had the worst breath I had ever smelled." Years later, he discovered the cause: Mrs. Roosevelt was a firm believer in eating several cloves of garlic every day for good health. Dr. Meadows was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He was a member of Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg and Rice Meadow Fly Fishing Club in Westminster. Patients who visited Dr. Meadows' office were always surprised to see a trophy white tail deer and a large marlin that he had caught in Hawaii gracing the walls. Ed was an accomplished fiddler and boxer in his youth. Dr. Meadows was a raconteur who loved to recall stories of his youth in West Virginia, which were told in a slightly Southern accent which he never lost, despite spending his entire adult life in New England. A plaque in the lobby of the surgical wing of Leominster Hospital honors Dr. Meadows for his 32 years of service there as Chief of Surgery. Ed is survived by three daughters: Lois (Pete) Dorman of Georgetown, DE; Melinda (Paul) Miller of Sterling, MA and Sarah Meadows of Urbana, IL and two sons Edmund C. "Bud" (Mary Theresa) Meadows, Jr. of Chicago, IL and Jim (Peggy) Meadows of Beverly Hills, MI, one sister Tina Taylor of Moundsville, WV, as well as 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 6 brothers: Theodore, Jay, Charles, David, Alphonse and Berman; and 1 sister, Lena. According to Ed's wishes, there will be no visitation and no memorial ceremony. Arrangements are being handled by E.P. Mahar and Son Funeral Home of Bennington, VT. Those wishing to honor Ed's memory are asked to make a donation in his name to the Health Alliance Hospital Guild at Leominster Hospital or to the American Cancer Society.

I worked for him after I graduated from Leominster Hospital in 1960, but did not start working for him until 1964, he was a great boss very giving and very kind, also a great sense of humor. I got married ing 1964, and for our wedding he gave me a great rocking chair which is still in the family. there are so many wonderful things he did for me , he helped me buy a new car, he bought me a pair of skies for xmas, one year so I could learn to ski, didn't learn much , never made it to the olympics. For so many things I thank him, great giving man. Marie Jean (Normandin) Smith Now Living in Sun City , Calif.

i met dr meadows in the early 1990's when i opened my
dental practice in bennington. our conversation started when he asked me where in west virginia are you from. although i grew up in the northern panhandle and attended wvu he would bring up elkins . often we talked of rural heath care as my father also was a surgeon and practiced family medicine and surgery. we talked of hunting and his trips to the west with family especially as his mobility declined how he accomplished this. a man of great accomplishments, compassion and a real sense of his roots.
and heritage. i for one will miss my conversations with dr meadows. i have great respect for this talented carrying west virginian. He will continue to
be carried in the hearts of the people who's lives he touch with his skill and compassion

Please accept our heartfelt condolences on Ed's passing. My earliest memories were when he came back to Gilman in the summer, and I was staying with Grandpa & Grandma Meadows on the dairy farm. He and Jay talked about girls and stuff that didn't make much sense to me, until about 10 years later. But the most enjoyable time was when we made our yearly trip to CA to hunt deer and wild boar. I would rent a SUV and pick them up at SFO, and we would go up together to Bucks ranch. I have so many fond memories of our time there and deeply miss that time together. Take care.

Many thanks to everyone for the kind words about our Dad. For the first 25 years of our lives, he was just "Good Old Dad". Then when we all grew up, got married and had kids of our own, he became "Grandpa Meadows". He was especially proud of his grandchildren who followed him into medicine: his oldest grandson, Dr. Jeff Meadows, is a Pediatric Cardiologist in California. His youngest granddaughter Caitlin Meadows, is in her final year of Medical School in Michigan, and will be starting her Orthopedic Surgery residency next year. Now he has 5 great grandsons and a single great grandaughter, Madeleine Meadows. He made a point of telling Maddie how special and beautiful she is, as well as praising her for being such a good student. In his various roles as Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, he was always kind, loving and fun. His legacy will live on in the next generation of Meadows children.
