She graduated from McGill University in 1951. Ruth was an avid potter and artisan, and was a long-time member of the Wellesley Arts and Crafts Guild, the Windsor Club (Waban) and Longwood tennis groups, and the Bear Knoll Ski group. After raising her children she earned a Master's degree from Boston University in Elementary Education and worked for several years as a remedial reading teacher at the Emerson School in Newton, MA, followed by 10 years working in the computer industry and many years creating and teaching pottery.
