E. CASEY Obituary

CASEY, E. Paul 83, of Marblehead, MA, Hobe Sound, FL and formerly of Grosse Point, MI, died at his home in Marblehead on August 16. Mr. Casey attended the Fessenden School and graduated from Phillips-Exeter Academy in 1948. He received a B.A. from Yale University in 1952 and received a M.B.A with distinction from Harvard Business School in 1955. Mr. Casey started his career managing his familys business, Davidson Rubber Co., Inc. In 1965, Davidson was sold to McCord Corporation, and he succeeded as President of McCord the following year. Upon the merger of McCord and Ex-Cell-O Corp. in 1978, he became President and COO, and in 1981 he became CEO of Ex-Cell-O. Textron acquired Ex-Cell-O in 1986, and he became Vice Chairman of Textron. He resigned in 1987, and in 1988 founded Metapoint Partners, a private equity firm, and was Chairman Emeritus at Metapoint. In addition to serving on the boards of directors of Metapoint portfolio companies, he was also a member of the Chief Executives Organization, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Harvard Business School Club of Florida, President of Hobe Sound Community Chest, and Senior Warden at Christ Memorial Chapel. He served as a Director at numerous companies, including Wyman-Gordon, Comerica, Paladin Brands, Durcon Incorporated, Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Inc., and Hood Enterprises. Paul was a seasoned and successful yachtsman, racing and cruising on a wide variety of sailing vessels, especially his beloved sloop Manticore. He served as Commodore of the Eastern Yacht Club, helping to guide the club through the modernization of many key areas, including admissions and club governance. He was also a member of the New York Yacht Club, Jupiter Island Club, Hobe Sound Yacht Club, Detroit Athletic Club, Grosse Pointe Club, Yondotega Club and the Question Club. Throughout his life, he donated his time and resources to numerous charities. His philanthropy extended from large health care institutions, such as Henry Ford Hospital and Lahey Clinic, to smaller civic organizations helping people in need, as well as many educational institutions. Paul is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Bickford) Casey, and his five daughters, Patricia Shepherd, of Gloucester, MA, Tyler Casey, of Hull, MA, Jennifer Casey, of Marblehead, MA, Sheila McManus, of Brunswick, ME and Gina Pettengill, of Topsfield, MA. He was predeceased by his first wife of 46 years and childhood sweetheart, Patricia "Dinky" Pinkham Casey, who died in 1996. He also leaves behind four stepchildren; Pamela Patton, Ted Patton, Dick Patton, and Jennifer Rabley, and, as "Papa Paul", 24 grandchildren. Paul also leaves an enduring legacy for helping, learning from and caring for family and friends. He recognized the existential need to reach out to people of all ages. In concluding his 1998 memoir he said, with the help of others, I have found fulfillment and joy. A memorial service will be held at St. Michaels Church in Marblehead on Friday, August 23rd at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Christ Memorial Chapel, 52 South Beach Road, Hobe Sound, FL 33455, or the Hobe Sound Community Chest, P.O. Box 511, Hobe Sound, FL 33475. I met Paul Casey on a few occasions during my college years. I found he was kind and knowledgeable and willing to share so much of himself. He reminded me of my father. We sailed together in Marblehead on a sloop he told me was one of the first Ted Hood had ever built. The brief time I spent with him I felt I'd learned something about life and sailing. Paul suggested I look him up when I graduated from college to talk about a job. I later regretted I didn't do so. Thanks Paul for my memories. Rest in peace.
