CONNELLY, John J. Tinker Of Needham August 17, 2013. Beloved husband of Mary Lou (McManus) Connelly for fifty-five years. Father of Timothy J. Connelly and wife Amie of Wellesley Hills; Anne E. Connelly of Atlanta, Georgia; Clare L. McDonagh and husband Peter of Latrobe, PA and Matthew J. Connelly and wife Catherine of Suwanee, Georgia. Grandfather of Kimberly, Peter and John McDonagh; Ryan, Nicholas and Matthew Connelly and Joseph and Jack Connelly. Preceded in death by brother Lawrence, sisters Elizabeth Knapp and Kathleen King. Graduate of Newton High School 1946; Northeastern University B.S. 1953; Ed.M.1966. Former Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Coach of Hockey and Football, Northeastern University. All New England Collegiate Quarterback in football, All New England defenseman in hockey and All New England 2nd baseman. Athletic Hall of Fame Newton High School, Northeastern University and American Baseball Coaches Association. One of Hundred People Who Left their Mark at Northeastern. Former President American Baseball Coaches Association, Eastern Mass. Ice Hockey Officials Assoc. and Mass. Track Officials Assoc. Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave., NEEDHAM, Wednesday, August 21, at 9 am. Funeral Mass at St. Josephs Church in Needham at 10 am. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Tuesday, Aug. 20, 4-8 pm. Interment St. Mary Cemetery, Needham. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John Tinker Connelly Athletic Scholarship Fund, NU Athletic Dept., Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115. mary lou and family, i was so very sorry to hear of tinker's passing and to late for me to attend the wake or the funeral.
I played football with tinker at n u for all 4 years and considered him my best friend ,our friendship continued for many many years after our graduation and he was a true true friend.we saw each other a great deal and always cherished our football days together at n u now he is on a different team and when god calls me it will be because tinker again wants me to be on his team ,as the song goes, "somewhere up there"

Coach Connelly was a humble and true gentlman.Besides being one of the best coaches I ever played for, Coach Connelly was an inspiration and a great role model to all of his players.He represented true class and was a true ambassador for Northeastern University.My condolences to the entire Connelly Family for their loss. Mary Lu and family,
Tinker was a favorite of a close group of New England baseball coaches of our time. Tinker - to all the great times we had in college baseball plus coaches meetings, ABCA Conventions, NCAA tourneys, etc., etc. May you rest in peace.

Dear Mary Lu and all of his family, Lucy & Vito, send our deepest sorrow with the passing of "Tinker". We have know him to be a wonderful husband, father as well as a personal friend and football teammate at Northeastern. Thereafter enjoying the many years attending games together at Parson's Field , California, Annapolis and many others. Including sharing N.U. Varsity Club duties he gave so much to. We will miss him very much.

Coaching at Boston University,I was blessed and privileged to know and associate with Tinker for many years, for he was my counterpart in baseball and hockey at Northeastern, he was truly a great man, I'm very sorry to learn of his passing, but know that he is now in a better place; in heaven with our Lord and Savior, I pray; dear Lord please have mercy on his soul, and bless his spirit for he was truly a great friend and an outstanding representative of college athletics; he will surely be missed, rest in peace Tinker!
