Dear Ann,
I just learned of Dean Thornburg's passing. He was a wonderful man who generously shared his wisdom and wit with so many students and friends, including myself.
I was so happy to have visited with him the last time I visited Boston.
I hope you are doing well and I send you my best,
Paula

I knew "Dean T" while I was a student @ MIT in the late 80s/early 90s. Marsh Chapel and that big white house in Brookline became homes away from home for this TX gal. Of special memory is Thanksgiving dinners. He cooked a mean meal :-) and always made all of us who were far away from our families feel welcome and at home (and I still think of him each Thanksgiving as my timing is often off and I remember his spreadsheet and smile :-). Another fond memory for me was his officiating at our wedding in Pacific Grove CA in 2000. We had to work around the BU basketball schedule (of course! :-) (It was a late fall wedding) but he was the key to a memorable day for me and my husband. Everyone commented about how memorable the service was for them too and about how thoughtful and inclusive he was (our wedding party was very diverse: a Jew, a Hindu, a Christian, a Buddhist, and a few agnostics). He was a special man, mentor, and friend -- he made a *huge* difference in my life :-) -- and I will miss him. My deepest condolences to each of you, his beloved family. He always spoke so highly and lovingly of each of you -- I felt like I knew you even though we've never met.
