RICHARD FEELEY Obituary

Feeley, Richard Kieffer Of Jamaica Plain, known lovingly by his many friends and family as "Rich Nice," died May 21, 2014, at the age of 34. A proud lifelong resident of Jamaica Plain, he is survived by his parents, Thomas Kieffer and Patricia Feeley, and brother, Luke Kieffer. Richard attended Boston Public Schools – the Trotter, Timilty and Boston Latin Schools – and the Commonwealth School. He graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 2003 with a degree in Psychology. He worked at METCO as a Tutor and Transportation Assistant. He was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease during his freshman year of college and dealt with difficult health issues for the remainder of his life. Richard took pride in his nickname, Rich Nice, and pleasure in sharing his love, humor, support, and kindness with everyone in his life. He loved music, quoting long passages from his favorite films, keeping track of the political world, and being with friends and family. He had a deep commitment to social justice and in his high school years, served on the Board of City Life/Vida Urbana. He embraced the social activism of his family and, in spite of his health problems, found many ways to make a difference in the world, and, in particular, to enrich the lives of his friends and family. Richard was greatly loved by his coworkers at METCO, especially by the children, who adored "Mr. Feeley," and enjoyed the love, attention and care he showered on them every day. Richard was truly lucky to have a wonderful mentor and inspiration in Hyacinth McLaren. Richard has left behind his grandmother, Eileen (Cassidy) Kieffer, and the families of his aunts and uncles: Robert and Karen Kieffer, Donald and Erica Kieffer, Mary Patricia Kieffer and Thomas Ray, Lawrence Kieffer and Pamela Polley, Karen Kieffer, David Kieffer and Denise Thompson Kieffer, Maureen and Manuel Arruda. Richard was also blessed to grow up living with and being loved by an extended family that included Ivonne and Frank Sepúlveda and their children, María, Paolo, and Amalia; and Zilma González Acabá and her children, Taira, Nahir, and Diego. The wake will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 5-8pm at Mann and Rodgers Funeral Home, 44 Perkins Street, Jamaica Plain, 02130. The funeral will be held there at 11am on Wednesday, May 28. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Richard's honor to City Life/Vida Urbana, www.clvu.org, 284 Amory Street, Jamaica Plain, 02130. A memorial service for Richard will be held at a later date.

Even in my darkest times , you always made the effort and forced a smile out of me and helped me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can´t believe it´s been 10 years. There´s not a day that passes that I don´t miss ya my brother. Every intelligent conversation we would build on, and every ridiculous moment we would die laughing over are the memories I hold in my heart proudly knowing you were a true friend. I wish you were here to see the man I´ve become. I know you´re with us in spirit and in a better place.

My brother from another. Been thinking bout you a lot lately. Bout to hit my 10- a decade of sobriety. Too many homies passed .. getting tougher by the day but ain’t never been easy for me I’m in it to win it. The world truly ain’t the same since you departed this realm. People seem that much more scandalous and deceitful now. I been busy as the pic shows (she’s getting big )
Gone Not Forgotten - I wish I had a time machine but we would’ve all been crammed up in the phone booth 12 deep on some Bill n Ted vs PGC madness
You aight I know already - I feel things more than most so I know my brothers all up there together. Check your boy being Daddy Infinite! 1 my brother.

Dear Tom and Pat,

I'm sure you think of Richard every day. But his anniversary will be this week and I've been thinking of him, and of course you, for a few days now. We typically go visit him at the cemetery. But I'm not sure what you're planning to do this year due to the required social distancing. In any case, please know that I'll be there with you, albeit in spirit. While I was thinking of Richard, I revisited an acrostic I wrote for him years ago:

Rich,
Its your Mom. I think of you everyday, but for some reason, I have thought of you all day today.
Of course, I cry a lot, but I also look at all those wonderful pictures we have of so many different stages of your life. In all of them you seem so happy and having fun- even after you got sick those many years ago. I miss and love you so, and just felt I had to try to tell you that today.

Thinking of You all today, Rich Nice, sweet heart that You were, and You, Pat and Tom and Luke and all of us who were blessed with Rich in our Lives who suffer the pain of His physical absence. My heart is with You always and my prayers are for You. May today, the second anniversary of Rich's passing, be a day of vivid memories of the great joys He brought us. Love You all... Miss You, Rich, though I feel You always close at heart. Give my Ricky a big hug from me up there in Heaven where I know You two are chillin' together, and where You both are waiting to greet us all upon our arrivals... May the bliss of Unconditional Love be embracing You always! ♡♡♡♡♡☆☆♡♡♡♡♡☆☆♡♡♡♡♡ PEACE

This is the beginning of 2015, and only today as I was reading Commonwealth School's magazine, did I discover your - our - terrible loss. I was at the School for almost forty years and met some wonderful girls and boys. I hope to remember many of them; I know that I shall never forget Richard. My heart is broken.

I knew Richard as a student when I taught at the Trotter and as a friend of my son Dan Russell's at Commonwealth. He added much to the world in his short life! RIP Richard!

Not a day goes by when you are not in my thoughts and prayers, Rich Nice... And the same for You, Pat, Tom and Luke. I feel your pain keenly. Death may be a part of Life, but it is just so hard to lose our sons when they are so young... Our greatest consolation can be what awesome People they were... And as is clear about Rich, He left some very positive energy in this crazy World and He will never be forgotten. Sending you all much Love and Strength and Peace. Big Hugs, Barb <3

Rich Nice—he was the one who taught me how to rhyme
(I didn't get too good). Maybe we didn't talk all the time
But he had a way each and every time he reached out
To make you feel unique and great—to leave each one no doubt
About how he valued each of us—his family and friends
And how we would do no less than go to the ends
Of the world to help, defend us, or make our lives better
So it's all of that and more I want to capture in this letter
And the humor and the laughs and the unpredictability
Spending time with Rich, you never knew where you would be
Ending up going, but you'd know it'd be good looks--
So many unique words and phrases. Also a man of books
and letters. So sad—beyond words that he's left us all behind
But know I'll see him later. Til then, here in our hearts & on our minds

Rich's family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.

Richard was a special presence at METCO, Incorporated. His kindness wrapped in wisdom had become a real part of the after school experience. Richard usually had a word to brighten the day of co-workers as well as students. He will be mourned and missed.

Pat and Tom and Luke, I remember Richard from our brief time working together at Local 285 doing data entry, with Wayne as our "boss". Richard worked hard and was quiet but we would get to talking about computer tech stuff and I would pick his brain to hear about how to do the latest in dvd copying and other "hot issues" at the time. I looked forward to seeing him each morning and our rambling discussions. They brightened up an otherwise dull day and it was fun for me to share in his youthful enthusiasm on life.

I am so sorry. My thoughts are with you. Louise Johnson

Richard has been my son Brian's friend for most of their lives. I remember how Brian and Rich would rap and make up all kinds of "beats" from the early age of 6 and 7. Richard had a brilliant mind and I was always amazed at the mature language skills he presented. he loved to read and for a few years when we lived in the same building Richard would come to hide in our apt. with a book by Stephen King or one of his parent's adult theme books. These were I am sure were some of the basis of his active boyhood imagination creating raps and poems and writings about topics and emotions way beyond the scope of a young boy. It is not fair that Richard had to suffer with such a difficult painful illness. He was kind and fun .AS a young man my communications with him were mostly email, facebook and were always thoughtful, caring and usually full of wonderful humor.
Rich Nice you will be missed by all of us who you loved and all of us who loved you. Pat, Tom and Luke my heart is broken for you and know that we are all here for you to help you to endure this unbearable loss.
