DANIEL LANGDALE Obituary

Langdale, Daniel T. Longtime resident of Newtonville, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home from pulmonary fibrosis on Sunday, September 28, 2014. He was 77. Dan was born in 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio to William and Hazel Langdale; received a BFA from Ohio University in 1959; served in the army from 1960-1964, discharged with the rank of captain; and from 1966-1989 he was an administrator in both financial aid and admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was instrumental in diversifying the undergraduate student body. He also served as Director of Admissions at the California Institute of Technology from 1988-1991. He returned to MIT in 1991 before retiring in 1997. Baseball was an integral part of Dan's life. In addition to being a loyal Red Sox fan, he played ball from his childhood into his 70s, ending his baseball career as a player and manager for the Eastern Massachusetts Senior League. Beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, he is survived by his wife, Sharry Langdale, daughter, Shelley Langdale and son-in-law, Joe Giuffre of Philadelphia, son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Candie Langdale, and granddaughter, Nico of Los Angeles and sister, Carol Marsh of Atlanta. A service to celebrate Dan's life will take place at 1:30 pm on November 1, 2014 in the Mezzanine Lounge on the 3rd floor of the Student Center at MIT. Plans are underway for memorial donations to be directed towards funding urban little league baseball.

Remembering Dan as a friend, softball player, wife's co-worker and all round good guy. Mr. Langdale knit an afghan for my first born son that we still have after 23 years. The afghan reminds us Dan and Sharry Langdale's love for others and the wonderful times spent in Massachusetts. Rest in peace Dan.

Cannot believe it's been 6 years since you left this earth. I open our '55 Yearbook and all the good memories come flooding back. Though we didn't spend much time together after Colerain, your friendship has always been a part of my life. RIP good friend.

Dan was one of the finest men I have ever met. As a neighbor on Brookside Ave in Newtonville we enjoyed Dan's friendship for many years. Gatherings and just chance neighborhood encounters with Dan and Sharry were always very stimulating and lots of fun. If I close my eyes I can still see him talking to me; I can so fondly remember his voice. Dan, I really miss you.

Mom, dad (me) and our son visited Cal Inst of Technology in 2003, where we met Mr. Langdale as Director of Admissions. We talked extensively about education at MIT, CIT and other universities. He was generous in his comments and down to Earth. We even discussed the out of topic subject: should he join fellow CIT's professors to play hoops weekly? We assured him: if you don't feel like playing, just shoot some hoops on the side. He also advised us not to feel diminished if CIT won't admit our son. He promised us that being as bright as he was, our son will do honor to any university of his choice. Dan was right all the way : ) Rest in peace, dear friend. We often remember your generous advices and our friendly chat. Look forward to meeting you on the other side some day : )

Dan: Your friendship has been a later life gift. You taught me much about patience, perspective and appreciation for the simple joy of playing a 'boys game' in our later years. Now you've shown us the possibility for grace, courage, humor and humility in facing our mortality. I'll miss our burgers beers, and baseball talk at D & G; but get the field ready up there....I'm sure we'll be teammates again.

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you. I know he was a personal guardian for me during my undergraduate years at MIT. There were many days I did not know if I would be able to afford food and he managed to find ways to assist me. He never once judged or made me feel bad about not having financial resources. I look forward to donating in his memory.

I'll never forget you Dan, you faced down death and didn't blink. Your kindness and courage and ability to live life to the fullest, no matter what are your gifts to us. There are more good people than bad in the world, you convinced me.

I first met Dan when the Doughboys softball team was formed about 2008. Dan was a playing manager; a great athlete, even tempered, caring for his players, inspiring comradeship, a will to win, all while having fun playing softball. We had good times, fun times on the diamond and my memories of Dan and the DoughBoys will always be pleasant ones.

Good Bye, Old Buddy...keep swinging.

If one is very lucky, people appear in our lives at critical junctures who, with their kindness, thoughtfulness, humor, attention, and patience completely change the course of our future for the better. Dan was that person to me. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

I read with great sadness that Dan has passed away. Dan was a consultant and an integral part of the Two Ten Footwear Foundations Scholarship Program where he worked with staff to develop a truly dynamic and worthwhile program. He was genuinely one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of knowing.
My thoughts go out to Sharry and his family-he will be missed!

I played on the same team with Dan and he was a class act. No matter what the situation he never got upset and tried to keep everyone focused on competing, whether we won or lost. He will be greatly missed by a lot of people. Johnny B

A man of decency and sportsmanship, whose presence made EMASS better. I picture him laughing and playing in a "Field of Dreams."

We were across the street neighbors of Dan and Sharry for 13 years on Brookside Ave. Dan was one of the most lovable, entertaining, and enjoyable persons I have ever met. He always had a positive attitude, had good words for everybody and an infectious sense of humor. We had many good times with Dan and Sharry over the years and we will sorely miss him. Our deepest sympathy to Sharry and the Langdale family. Tom Sullivan
