HOWARD POWERS Obituary
Powers, Howard We mourn the loss of our dear father Howard Powers (formerly Wyman) on Monday, Nov 17th, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, Calif. Howard enjoyed good health and an active life in his final years, and was taken suddenly by a heart attack while working a puzzle at his favorite place, the Live Oak adult day program in Los Gatos. We thank them and the Vasona care home for the love and comfort they gave to Howard. Howard Arthur Wyman was born to Howard A. and Aimee L. Wyman on Dec 11, 1924 at Tuxedo Park Hospital, NY. He grew up in East Orange, NJ and attended the public schools. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army engineers and served his country for three years, first in the UK, and then in the Philippines. After the war, Howard enrolled at the NJIT and took his BSME in 1948. He was an ingenious designer, and worked for five decades in his profession, first for General Electric in New England, and then gravitating toward a career with start-up companies in Silicon Valley. In 1953, Howard changed his surname to Powers and married Lorraine Alice Delany. He designed and built a striking modern house in Medfield, Mass, and there the couple raised seven children. In 1972, Howard moved to Sunnyvale, Calif. where he was rejoined in 1979 by Lorraine and his children at varying intervals. Our father was an energetic worker, and devoted his life to the support of his family. He had a happy and enthusiastic personality, and a generous concern for his community. In the 1970s, Howard took up running, and remained a passionate competitive runner into his later years, earning distinction among older racers. He became very interested in diet, and experimented with raw foods and supplements as would promote longevity. He adopted unusual beliefs in many directions, and was always eager to share these with friends and family. He had a prodigious store of knowledge, and was a master at games of trivia. Howard is survived by five children: Christopher, Laurence, George, Juliette Wilcox, and Noelle Dearborn. Elaine died of cancer as a toddler, and we mourn the still-recent loss of our sister Michelle, also from cancer. Howard's 13 grandchildren are divided between California and New England. Burial and graveside service will be 2PM Monday, Dec 8th at Bourne National Cemetery.
