An artist from Mohegan and I shared our memories of Don today. I lived in Ipswich. During the Summer 1962, I took watercolor classes from Don in Rockport, MA. He taught me everything about using the best paper, brushes, and pigments. Still use that Hatfield flat 1"! His focus on thumbnail sketching techniques, "center of interest" and "curtains of atmosphere" are phrases that are permanently thumb-printed into my practice of watercolor. Thank you, Don.

This very distinct memory,, how to describe?
It was 1970 or close to it, I had met the love of my life in collage.
He was a native, I was a foreigner .. he took me to a party at Don Stones . The people, the art, I was mesmerized.
I will never forget that night.
I am grateful to have been a part of this incredible time.

Sarah, I just opened my favorite American Art Review that arrived today and as always immediately look for Don's entry. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. I came to visit you and Don about 3 years ago on MI and I was deeply touched by both of you, your creative lives together, your wonderful house there which I often think of with the tremendous oil lamps lit on a cold foggy day. I am grateful to have met, and had a bit of time with both of you. My deepest condolences. I will miss his monthly paintings that were always an inspiration.

Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss. Those years, mid 90's when I was in Don's painting group on Monhegan are full of special memories. I remember you being on the side smiling. I remember being concerned that he would skim my painting into the ocean....He was a special man. Monhegan will not be the same without him.

Sincerest condolences to Sarah, Caleb and the rest of the Stone family. It seems impossible that we will no longer see Don tearing around Monhegan on that golf cart of his. He was always so generous, welcoming us in to see his work, to be inspired by it...the world has lost an amazing artist and a great human being. To the Stone family my deepest sympathies. You all know how much he meant to me through the years. He was a class mate of my mother at Gloucester High. She told me when I was young to seek him for art instruction as he "was the best artist she knew". She was right. His influence will live on in all of us.
