CAROLYN KAELIN Obituary

Kaelin, MD, MPH, FACS, Carolyn Mary Of Boston died surrounded by loved ones on July 28, 2015. Beloved wife of William G. Kaelin, Jr., MD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School Professor, and loving mother to Kathryn Grace and William (Tripp). She was 54 years old. A technically gifted and compassionate breast cancer surgeon at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Carolyn graduated from Smith College and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She earned her master's degree from Harvard School of Public Health. At 34, she became the Founding Director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital, then the youngest woman singled out for a job of this caliber at a major Harvard teaching hospital. She quickly established herself as one of the nation's premier breast cancer surgeons. Also active in research, Carolyn focused on how doctors and patients make medical decisions and on quality of life issues for breast cancer survivors, particularly the role of exercise. In 2001, Newsweek featured her as one of 15 Women of the New Century. An avid athlete, Carolyn rode repeatedly in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a 192-mile bicycle ride fundraiser for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Shortly after a training ride in 2003, she noticed early signs of her own breast cancer. After several attempts at breast conservation surgery failed, she had a mastectomy. Nonetheless, while still recovering from surgery, Carolyn rode the PMC with team WOW (Women Oncologists on Wheels). Sadly, a rare complication of breast cancer therapy prevented Carolyn from returning to the clinical practice and patients she so loved. She instead redoubled her patient education and survivorship efforts, with a particular emphasis on the underserved, all while being a devoted mother to her two children. Through many actions, Carolyn vastly improved the lives of women facing breast cancer. A pathfinder with vision and the steel to see it through, she initiated research on the value of rowing in patients with postoperative lymphedema with an assist from Olympian Holly Metcalf, the founder of We Can Row, co-authored two award-winning books, Living Through Breast Cancer and The Breast Cancer Survivor's Fitness Plan, and helped create an innovative, exercise-centered breast cancer recovery program for the YMCA. Intent on using her experiences to help others, she established the Quality of Life Fund at Brigham and Women's Hospital to support breast cancer survivorship projects and launched the successful Knowledge, Strength, and Grace conference series for breast cancer patients and their families. In Aspen, Colorado, Carolyn's adopted second home where she loved to bicycle and hike, she cofounded the Quality of Life Cancer Fund with her dear friend Barbara Berger. Under the stewardship of the Berger family, this fund raises over $100,000 each year to support indigent cancer patients living in Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley. Both a beacon and a powerhouse, Carolyn was empathetic, upbeat, deeply kind, intelligent, and gracious. She received numerous honors, including an Exceptional Women Award from Candy O'Terry and WMJX as well as the Mary Horrigan Connors Award at Brigham and Women's Hospital recognizing her outstanding commitment to women's health. In 2010, Carolyn was diagnosed with brain cancer unrelated to her previous breast cancer. In the course of her treatments, she had two brain surgeries, each requiring extensive rehabilitation so that she could relearn to walk, and she was a trailblazer on several clinical trials testing new medical treatments for brain cancer. Always indomitable, she faced innumerable challenges, yet rose to each one, roaring back from setbacks to spend increasingly precious time with close friends and her family, who meant the world to her. Carolyn is survived by her husband and children, parents Mary and Richard Scerbo of Boston, brother Richard Scerbo of Boston and his wife Ellen Scerbo, and many loving aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and in-laws. A memorial service will be held at St. Ignatius Church 28 Commonwealth Ave. Chestnut Hill on Friday, August 28th at 4PM. Guests are welcome to wear a touch of pink. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston or to Dana Farber Cancer Institute to support brain tumor research under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Wen. Dear Carolyn will always hold space in my heart, memories, and prayers. I think of her so often, especially as our children have grown, hit milestones, created their own amazing lives. Oh, we would have had so much to chat about over a breakfast date at Tiny's.

I am forever grateful for the friendship we shared, albeit too brief. Carolyn was a true blessing in my life!

To Bill, KG and Tripp,
Please know The Stankiewicz Family will forever love you and will always remember Carolyn as the true gift she was.

Just wanted to say that I hope that the family is doing well and carrying on her legacy while making your own paths that would make her proud.

I met her over twenty years ago and in the short time I knew her, she made a remarkable impact in my life. I miss her a lot but I try to live with the sort of commitment, courage and compassion that she eximplied because it keeps a part of her with us.

For all the time that has past there are not many days when I do not think of this beautiful woman. I met her in 1997 and was instantly moved by her compassion. I was able to witness how she treated the family and loved ones of her patients and it has never left me. In my quest to be my best in helping patients at the hospital unbeknown to her, she taught me so much. I was a volunteer at the time and she was one of the inspirations that helped me to decide that I wanted to work there. In 2000 I did just that. She was never too big to be inspired by others, whether you were another doctor, environmental service or a volunteer. Despite how busy her schedule was she made time to take me out to lunch. She wanted me to know how much she appreciated the work that I did too. It's been a little more than 20 years ago that we connected and I still aspire to be like her in helping people however we can during times when they can use the most support and caring. Let your light shine because it has the power to spread to others and thus stay aglow infinitely.

Not a day goes by without a prayer and a thank you for the gift of Carolyn Kaelin in my life. When she was featured as one of the 10 women to watch in the new Millenium, I reached out to her office and scored an interview with her for my weekly radio program, Exceptional Women. From the moment she walked into the recording studio, I knew we would be forever friends and we were. My daily prayer list includes Carolyn and her family. She was truly an exceptional daughter, wife, mother, surgeon, author and friend. My Love & Friendship Always, Candy O'Terry

I just found about the passing of Dr. Carolyn Kaelin at the ASCO meeting where her husband is receiving an award. Dr. Kaelin was involved in my treatment in 2001. I have survived fifteen years with metastatic breast cancer, constant treatment. Dr. Kaelin was the beginning of me taking charge of my illness and for that I am very grateful.

God Bless her and her family. She helped many women.

To Dr. Kaelin's family and friends,

I never met Carolyn, but I am a breast cancer survivor and I had her book by my bedside throughout the year and a half of my treatments. I felt like she was holding my hand throughout the entire time and she made a huge difference in my life. I am so saddened to hear of her passing and wanted you to know how great an impact she had on my life. I know I am only one of many whose lives she helped.

I apologize for the late note, but I was just made aware of this page and wanted to let you know how much her book helped me that year and a half. Her empathy and love shone throughout the pages. She will be missed.

All my best,
Claudia Schmidt

To Carolyn's family,
I don't know what prompted me to conduct a search for Carolyn last night, perhaps it was a desire to reconnect with old college friends, and I was immeasurably saddened to hear of Carolyn's death. I last saw Carolyn at a Smith reunion, were we visited and marched in the alumnae parade. I will forever remember us sitting in O-chem together in the front row at Smith, each of us with our multi-colored highlighters, and Carolyn with her pearls (!). Her laugh was infectious, and she was a brilliant, kind and generous woman. She has touched the world in so many ways during her short life. As the Eagles so aptly put it, there is a bit of "a hole in the world tonight" as a result of her passing.

Prayers with you

I was privileged to have been one of her patients. I see the evidence everyday of her skill as a surgeon. She saved so many lives with dedication and graciousness. It was evident that she also had balance
And devotion in her all too brief life to support the arduous career path that she choose. She was emotionally and intellectually uniquely gifted. Her legacy will go on and on which sadly cannot relieve the sorrow of her exceptionally close family and friends. I'd she couldn't find a cure for her cancer some else must take up the challenge of these terrible disease?
It was with deep sadness that every one who knew her understands that I extend my heartfelt sympathy to her family. Louise Wechsler VMD

To Dr. Kaelin's husband, children, parents, brother and other loved ones: I did not know Dr. Kaelin though I do remember seeing her at the Brigham years ago. I then read of her considerable accomplishments in the Smith Alumnae Quarterly some years ago. I just went through these comments and I sincerely hope you all can take some comfort in knowing that she touched so many people and that she made this world a better place for so many. And that she faced the hand that life dealt her with grace and compassion.

So from a Smithie, my deepest condolences to you all. May God bless you all, may you all find some peace and comfort and may God rest her precious soul.

I first met Carolyn when she was d dear friend of our daughter, Lies, at Smith. We followed her career with admiration and gratitude -- the latter because it was she, as a skilled young cancer surgeon, who saved my wife, Hedy's life.

Hedy joins me in sending our sincere condolences to Carolyn's family. Her death is a great loss but her life will always remain an inspiration.
