October 13, 2016

I miss my friend, Dave. I miss the early-morning calls, "Hey, Richard, this is Dave. Have you had breakfast yet?" "No." "OK. Where do you want to go? We'll go anywhere you want. My treat."
It was always his treat, despite my protestations to the contrary.
He almost never showed up at the time promised, but that was Dave. That used to be my issue, too, but I managed to manage the clock in a way that Dave never could grasp. Same in tennis, or lunch, but no one gets it right all the time.
I'll miss the tennis matches he and I played either as doubles partners or as opponents. He loved his little drop shots just over the net, but he could beat you with his powerful passing shots, too.
I'll miss his ever-present sense of humor. He didn't necessarily tell jokes; he was just naturally funny with the things he'd say and the way he'd say them. Illustrating his brand of humor was his campaign slogan when he ran for junior class president at Stoneham High School. His slogan: "Much will be accomplished under Sheets." He won. You might say he was defined by his humor, and his generosity. I always thought he gave more than he got.
I'll miss playing my CDs for him, the ones with songs from the 1950s and '60s. He enjoyed listening to classical music, of Beethoven and Chopin and Strauss, but he was just as happy humming to "my" soft-rock tunes of Rydell and Anka and Avalon.
I'll miss hearing him say of my daughter, or wife, "She's a great gal."
I'll miss a lot about Dave. He was a great guy.
