"We become what we love and who we love shapes what we become" St. Clare of Assisi.
This is the last email I received from Tony on July 7th. No words could have ever held more true, for loving Tony did shape who I have become and I am so much better for having known him. He was the man I looked up to and the man that all will be measured by. Although we weren't related by blood, our bond was special & unique and he was and forever will be my "heart" father. He was loved deeply & unconditionally by my mother and all her children & grandchildren. He came into my life in when I was in my early 20's, and called me a space cadet and for the next 22 years I was extremely fortunate to have this amazing man as part of my life and I ended up per his email in June of this year he wrote "when one becomes a teacher by your pupils you'll be taught". He said I deserved the accolade "Teachers Pet". I will miss him tremendously. I love you Tony!

I worked with Tony when he established TAP at MassHousing and got to know his strength of commitment, passion and character. We had many discussions about "Life" and while we sometimes looked at events from different perspectives, I admired him greatly. My condolences to his family

Some people lead by the mere mantle of authority. Some lead by the force of their arguments. Better by their example. Tony led by the latter two. I was always glad to follow his lead. He will be much missed as the conscience of the Smedley Butler Brigade. Tony Flaherty-Presente-RIP, Brother, RIP-Al Johnson-VFP

Tony was a ferociously good man, deeply committed to an honest look at himself and the world around him and unafraid to speak out. He was devoted to securing expect and justice for people no one else cared about and was the most compassionate man I have known. The world is certainly better for his efforts. I will miss getting copies of his letters to the Globe.

If our journey here on this earth is measured by the number of lives we touch with kindness and compassion and devotion, then Tony Flaherty travelled thousands and thousands and thousands of miles. I knew Tony as a visionary, an advocate, a poet, and a friend. We worked together at MassHousing for several years and his unwavering commitment to helping those most in need, inspired me to want to do the same. Tony's loyal heart and courageous Spirit profoundly touched my life and for that I am eternally grateful. I love you Tony. I know you are in heaven leading a group of Angels on some great mission. Until we meet again, my friend, may God hold you, every so closely, in the palm of his hands. Colleen Kelley

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."?
You did it.

I knew Tony as Leader, Activist, Humanitarian, Writer primarily Father. Of witness to 63 years, his greatest ability was to: recognize, learn and evolve. His constant question "What would Jesua say or do?" He faced his answer. He has earned his final years of devotion.... peace.

In the Friends Meeting where I grew up, in the Mid-Hudson Valley, I went to Sunday School with Pete Seeger's daughter Meka. Pete would come and play his banjo for us and became an inspiration for me throughout my life. Tony was a troubadour with a different instrument, his voice and his pen, but with the same message. The attached song is one troubadour honoring his brother.

It's hard to believe that such a vital, gracious in gratitude, money-where-your-mouth-is kind of guy has moved on ... (even if it is to the pastures of Heaven!). Tony, you will be sorely missed.

As Edmund Burke reminds us, " the only thing needed for the triumph of Evil is for good men to do nothing". Dear Tony did not accept this, he raged against the Evil now in front of us to the very end. He did not "go quietly into the night".

Dona nobis pacem.
