Roger Katz Obituary

Roger H. Katz

DUMMERSTON Roger H. Katz, 65, of Black Mountain Road passed away peacefully late Monday morning, April 1, 2013, in the comfort of his home following an extended illness.

Roger was born in Detroit, Mich., on Aug. 15, 1947, the son of Edward and Genevieve (Kocot) Katz. He was raised and educated in the Detroit area, graduating from Royal Oak Dondero High School, Class of 1965.

A resident of the Brattleboro area since 1965, he attended Marlboro College where he majored in Physiology. Once arriving in Brattleboro to attend Marlboro, he fell in love with the area making it his home for the past 48 years.

Well-known in the community as a professional photographer, he established two photography shops, Elliot Street Camera and Photo 101, then located on Main Street. His current business, Black Mountain Studios, was operated out of his home in Dummerston. At the time of his death he had also been employed at Omega Optical in Brattleboro, working for his close friend, Robert Johnson, whom he initially met at Marlboro College.

In conjunction with his passion with photography, he enjoyed cycling, contra dancing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and time spent in the woods. Roger was a quiet unassuming man always seen around town with his camera equipment in hand. He was a member of several local bicycle and contra dance groups.

Survivors include his father of Birmingham, Mich.; his beloved sister, Marsha Katz ,and her husband, Bob Liston, of Missoula, Mont.; two nephews, Christopher and Stephen Johnson, and two great-nieces and several cousins.

Additionally he leaves a large host of friends and acquaintances.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held tentatively at the Stone Church on Main Street at a future time and date to be announced by the funeral home. Services are also scheduled for family members back in the Detroit area. Burial of his cremated remains will be in Wilder Cemetery in Dummerston, sometime during the summer after the cemetery reopens.

I'm sure Roger will be missed by many. I only knew him for a few years. I found him to be kind, helpful and someone to share photographic knowledge with. He is very much missed.

Months later I have just learned about Roger who was a high school classmate to my husband and myself. I will remember our last wonderful visit in Royal Oak at a mini reunion. Sad news.

You always were an odd duck, but you were diligent and loyal. Miss the days! In thinking of Brattleboro in the 80s you were such a constant presence. You will be missed.

I have wonderful memories of Roger during my years at Marlboro, both as a student and visiting artist. He looked you in the eye when he talked to you, and his gentle voice was always welcoming. I'm sorry for your loss.
