James Zellerbach Obituary

JAMES DAVID ZELLERBACH, JR.

James David Zellerbach, Jr., 93, passed away at his residence on Monday, May 16, 2011, in Brownsville, Texas. He was born in San Francisco on Dec. 19, 1917.

James served his country as a decorated World War II bomber pilot. He settled in Brownsville in 1966. He was an avid world traveler, photographer and videographer. Traveling was his greatest passion along with his wife Gloria who was his soulmate and always by his side. He was a great role model to all who knew him. At 93, he was still so full of life and claimed that the secret to his longevity was his nightly cocktails with family and friends, which he called "Whiskey Time." He was very much involved in his community but especially the Arts Program at UTB-TSC.

Mr. Zellerbach was preceded in death by his parents, James David Zellerbach and Hana Fuld Zellerbach.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria Zellerbach; children, David Zellerbach (Elizabeth), Ralph Zellerbach (Leonora), Anne Zellerbach, Rocio Rueda, Paul Zellerbach (Paige) and Leslie Zellerbach Castanon (Robert); his godchild, Rosaura Schmidt (Wayo); his grandchildren, Jamie Zellerbach (Bonnie), Derek Bruce, James Zellerbach (Laura), Scott Zellerbach, Carlo Marco Zellerbach (Marissa), Heather Young (Graham), Tanya Schmidt, Lesile Castanon, Eddie Schmidt, Robin Castanon and Jordan Castanon; many great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard Zellerbach; his niece, Susan Zellerbach; and various other nieces, nephews and great friends.

Jim did not wish to have a funeral or any type of service. In his own words, "It is my wish and hope that if anyone wants to remember me then let him give a party and hoist one or even two to toast me. This will be a happy occasion to celebrate my completion of my mission on this earth, and nothing more."

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Arts Program at the University of Texas at Brownsville in memory of James David Zellerbach, Jr. Please contact Laurie Howell at (956) 882-4334.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista, Cemetery and Mausoleum. 125 McDavitt Blvd., Brownsville, TX 78521. Phone (956) 541-5400. Dignity Memorial Provider.
