Donald W. Poffenbaugh

CRESTLINE: Donald W. Poffenbaugh, 83, of Whetstone Twp., Crawford County, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Crestwood Care Center, Shelby. He passed away from natural causes.

Donald was born at home on the family farm on North Washington Street in Jackson Twp., Crawford County on July 1, 1928 to the late Clarence E. and Dorothy (Yeitter) Poffenbaugh. Don was married to Mylene E. Studer for 61 years. They became man and wife on September 15, 1950 and she survives him.

Donald was retired from Columbia Gas after 30 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea. He was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church, Bucyrus. He was a Life Member and past Commander of McWhirter Post #488 of the American Legion, Crestline. He was a 50 year member of Bucyrus Lodge # 139 F. & A.M., a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of the Aladdin Temple Shrine, Valley of Toledo. He was a member of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxiliary for 43 years and retired as a Major Emeritus. He was a member of the Crawford Antique Farm Machinery Assoc., Bucyrus. Don loved to garden and was very particular about how his garden should look, which meant NO weeds! He enjoyed mowing, fishing and hunting. Woodworking and spending time with his family were his favorite past-times. His grandchildren called him "Their Teasing Grandpa". For many years, Don and Mylene made Christmas ornaments for the grandchildren. Don would craft the ornament and Mylene would paint and decorate them.

He is survived by his two sons: Walter E. (Sheila) Poffenbaugh, Willard and Ken C. (Deb) Poffenbaugh, Bucyrus, his daughter Donene S. Poffenbaugh of Mt. Gilead, four grandchildren: Eric W. Poffenbaugh, Meagan L. (Bryan) Benner, Andrea Poffenbaugh and Erin Poffenbaugh, and five great grandchildren. Don is survived by his two sisters: Margery (Bud) Swartz, Attica and Mary (Art) Thompson, Crestline and eleven nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Crestline. Masonic services will be given at 4:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M on Monday May 7, 2012 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Crestline with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline. Full military honors will be given at the graveside by the U. S. Navy and the Crestline/Galion veterans organizations.
