CARROLL HULL Obituary

CARROLL GEORGE HULL - ENOSBURG FALLS - Carroll George Hull, age 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, 2011. Born in Berkshire, Dec. 21, 1920, to Clarence and Katherine (Dunton) Hull and raised on a farm in Franklin, Carroll graduated from Franklin High School in 1938. He went to work for the St. Albans Railroad as a machine apprentice. He enlisted in the Vermont National and was activated in 1941. Carroll served in New Zealand, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, Rendova, New George, New Guinea and Luzon. A WWII veteran, Carroll served in the Army until 1945 through four campaigns - two in the Southwest Pacific and two in the Pacific. He did receive the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Serve Medal, and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign with Bronze Service and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Star. Upon return for a short time, he owned a blacksmith shop and the Franklin "Sweet Shop." Carroll attended the University of Vermont in the ROTC program, and continued his education, receiving his Masters from St. Michael's College. Carroll taught in Rutland and Woodstock, returning to the area as the Principal of Brigham Academy. In 1964 he started a 23 year career as the Principal of Richford Jr. Sr. High School. After retiring in 1987, he served many years on the local school and supervisory union board and served a term as a state legislator. In his later years he returned to farming, doing what he could at Pleasant Valley Farms. Carroll had a strong belief in country and community and service to both. A humble man, Dad will remain an example to all who knew him. Carroll married Sally Gates, also from Franklin, and had five children. He is survived by his wife, Sally; daughter, Melanie Hull; son, Chris Hull and fiancee, Skye; daughter, Suzanne Hull-Parent and husband, Mark; son, Peter Hull and fiancee, Kim Graham; daughter, Amanda St. Pierre and husband, Mark; grandchildren, Tonya, Scott and Beth Fullington, Michael Boomhower, Allison Parent, Adrea and Padraic Parent, Joshua, Jenne and Mikayla Hull, Jordon, Tyler and Conner Lamay and Meghan, Jamie and Bradley St. Pierre; and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Devin Scott. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Dorothy Hull; and niece, Donna Owlett. He was predeceased by his parents; an infant sister, Dorcas; his brother, Merriman; and a grandson, Nicholas Parent. Carroll was very appreciative of the wonderful caregivers who made it possible to spend his days at home: Wendy, Denise, Sam, Roberta, Joanne and Karla, and also a special nurse, Marie Hathaway - you have been the best. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at 10 a.m. in the Franklin United Church, with Pastor Jason McConnell Officiating and Pastor Pat Hoadley assisting. The memories of him have played over and over in my thoughts this last week..funny ones (he could never hear my voice pitch!), sad ones (his comforting presense at Suzi's when Nicholas passed) and so many happy ones; reading the paper on the porch at camp, making his special chicken marinade (which I think was oil, vinegar, salt and pepper -- but I'm still not sure) and his speech at Pete and I's wedding. I'll forever think of him as family, his picture will always be hung in my house and I will hold him close in my heart until the day I see him again. My love to the family, Godspeed the transition of hurt and loss to the fond celebration of a great, great man that walked among us. I will miss you Carroll.
