STEPHEN MOUNT Obituary

STEPHEN J. J. MOUNT - WILLISTON - Stephen J. J. Mount, of Williston, died unexpectedly of accidental drowning while competing in a triathlon in Shelburne on July 2, 2011. Stephen was born in Vallejo, Calif. on Sept. 27, 1968, son of David and Frances Smith Mount. With his family, he lived in California, North Carolina and Montreal, Canada before the family moved to Vermont when he was age 14. Steve was a graduate of Burlington High School (Class of 1985) and earned a BS in Political Science from UVM in 1989. He played varsity football at BHS and was the Managing Editor of the Cynic at UVM in 1988 and 1989. Steve married the love of his life, Karen Ashline Mount, on Aug. 4, 1990. They have a lovely daughter, Brittany, who will be 17 this week, and delightful twin sons, Jacob and Ryan, who are 13. They will all miss their father but are determined to have futures that would make Steve very proud. Steve worked at IDX/GE for 21 years as a Senior Software Engineer. He really enjoyed his work there and the camaraderie of his peers. Steve loved to write and authored several books for young teens that he hoped one day would be published. He wrote a bi-weekly column for the Williston Observer and until very recently, he maintained a website, www.usconstitution.net, which received millions of page views and was widely used in schools throughout the country. Stephen loved the Constitution and had numerous mentions of his website on both local and national media. He was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Williston, had served in the Vermont Army Guard, and was head of the Families As Partners (FAP) for Williston schools for many years. He donated blood and platelets as often as he was allowed to and donated his organs upon his death. Although Steve was a Type 1 Diabetic, he wore a pump and competed in sports. He ran in the Vermont City Marathon on a team in May 2011 and competed in a number of other sports that required good conditioning. Steve's life was built around his family and extended family. He loved being the cook on one of many weekend parties either at his Williston home or at his family's lake house in Alburgh. There were annual Independence Day, Memorial Day, anniversary and birthday parties. Steve was an outstanding father, husband, son, and friend and will be truly missed. In addition to his wife and parents, Steve also leaves three brothers, James of Colchester and wife, Kelly, Robert of St. Albans Bay and wife, Bridget, Richard of Burlington and wife, Julie; his sister, Kristin of Essex and her husband, Nick Rosato; his in-laws, Terry and Kay Ashline of South Burlington; his brother-in-law, Rick Ashline of South Burlington; and his niece, Samantha, who resides at his and Karen's Williston home. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Special friends included David Chess, Tammy Proulx, and Kenneth and Victoria Morrison. Stephen and Karen were the godparents to Nicole Liberty and Kaitlynn Proulx. Friends and family are invited to come to visiting hours at Ready Funeral Home, 261 Shelburne Rd. in Burlington, on Monday, July 4, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass to celebrate his life will take place at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Williston on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Steve's remains have been cremated and burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to a college education fund for his three children. Donations can be made to Mount Family Education Trust, 325 South Union St., Burlington, VT 05401 or can be sent to the funeral home. To send online condolences, please visit www.readyfuneral.com.

Dear Frannie and Dave,

My name is Paula Thompson, and Paula and Bob were my god-parents. I have such wonderful memories of them both. Your mom, Auntie Paula, has been on my mind lately for some reason.

I was online looking for information on her, and sadly came across the unexpected notice for your son. I was so sorry to learn of your son's passing, and I pray that your family has moved through this difficult time.

Paula,

My dear Dave and Fran
I have just learned of Steve's passing. He worked with my late brother Skippy at IDX. I am truly heartbroken beyond words. You are truly two of the best people I have ever known. Love Suzy Phelps

I've never met Steve in person, but I feel that I know at least one side of him quite well. I was a member of www.usconstitution.net, a website that Steve set up and maintained to explain and teach about the US Constitution. Steve had a great love and respect for the Constitution. He had strong political beliefs, but moderated by his beliefs in fairness and respect for other opinions and beliefs.

I think I speak for all of Steve's USConstitution.net online friends when I say that we miss him. We miss his unique perspective and we miss his humor and wisdom. We wish his family our best.

Steve was a great family man and a friend to so many. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Steve was always quick with a smile especially if it was due to an oxymoron or a pun. He was writer and he loved the double entendras (sp). I loved that about him. We would laugh during meetings that would strike us a funny an may people didn't get it. Shirt.Woot was a favorite for both of us because of the above reasons.

I remember the year of the Swine Flu (I think it was the 2009-2010 school year); all of us had to take our students to a special workshop on how to properly wash our hands. There was a special substance that the kids rubbed on their hands, then washed the way they normally would, then went into a dark room with blacklights to see the spots they had missed. They were totally grossed out! Steve was there to help explain to us how to properly wash our hands to keep ourselves healthy! :) We miss you on Swift House, Steve.

April 2, 2012

Steve was the best son-in -law we could ever ask for. His love for Karen and Brittany,Ryan and Jacob and also his niece, Samantha, was very strong and true. Steve was a very smart and intelligent man who was well versed on all subjects. We remember when we first met Steve ,it was in the winter and he had shorts on driving his moped. Right off we knew he was good for Karen . We loved Steve very much and miss him a great deal.R.I.P.

Karen asked that memories be added today to mark nine months since our wonderful Stephen was taken from us. Steve was a writer at heart. Once, while on a visit to family in California--he was probably around 15-- I remember sitting at my dining room table and tossing book ideas around with him. Our story line involved the theft of the Rosetta Stone, and we had a pretty great plot going. I don't know if he ever wrote any of it down, but I remember it was a fun afternoon spent with a beloved nephew. I miss him...

Karen is my first cousin but I consider her more of a close friend. Although I did not know Steve well, I did have the opportunity to visit with the family and have dinner on occassion. Steve was a great cook but most of all, the love he showed to his wife and children was extremely rare. My heart goes out to those who were close to him and I regret not being one of them. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Dave,
My heart breaks for you, your family and specifically for Karen and your grandchildren. I too well know the pain you are experiencing as my father just passed a month ago and he too was way too young to say goodbye. The sudden shock is indescribable. My husband and my staff are praying for your entire family. We pray that peace will come to your hearts, that God will fill you with the strength you need in the days ahead and that the grief will be somewhat bearable. If you need someone to talk to, while it was my Dad and this is your son, I still know how you are feeling and it does help to talk with someone who can relate. I am here and you know my number. Be strong and know that God will never abondoned you.
Sincerely, Lynn Braker (Remedy Franchise Owner)

One of the most remarkable people/family I have ever met! Gone too soon, but will NEVER EVER be forgotten. Steve left an incredible mark in our community, and his family with great great morals, and respect and appreciation for life! People like this don't come along often and I am truly blessed to have had them in my life. I can't imagine the pain, the feeling of emptiness you are going thru right now, but know, this man is with you ALWAYS, and live with the wonderful memories, of a man who soo loved his family, and that will always be. Keep his spirit alive, and make him proud! If you need ANYTHING, please know we are here for you! You have lots of friends and support, and that is because you are exceptional! ~God wrap your arms around this family, at this difficult time! Love and prayers for you all, Love, Anne-Marie Edwards
