LILLIAN DESSO Obituary

LILLIAN D. DESSO - ESSEX - Lillian D. Desso died peacefully at her home on Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at the age of 69, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Lillian Dorothy (Cutting) Desso was born to Waldo and Norma (Woodworth) Cutting on Jan. 29, 1943, in Fairfax. She graduated from Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax in 1961 and married Gerald Frank Desso on Oct. 20, 1962. After working in the accounting department of Mary Fletcher Hospital, she undertook the challenge of reviving an old country store in Jericho Center that came to be known as "Desso's." Lillian touched thousands of lives during the 30 years she managed the store. During her "retirement years," she loved every minute of the 14 years she spent at the Smilie Elementary School in West Bolton working with children, families, and staff. She treasured all of the opportunities she had to touch the lives of others. Lillian is survived by her husband, Gerry, of 50 years; and her two daughters, Kimberly Desso and Karen MacDonald. Her greatest joys in life were the days she spent as a grandmother to her three grandchildren, Haley, Grayson and Jack MacDonald. She leaves her sisters and their spouses, Laura and Mark Ovitt and Vera and John Buttles. She also leaves her in-laws, Sandy Cutting, Joanne and Charles Myers, Marilyn Mahoney, Mae and Raymond Lamore, Betty Desso, and Betty Koonce; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Lillian was predeceased by her parents; parents-in-law, Harold and Neva Desso; her brother, Ronald Cutting; brothers-in-law, Harlow (Bud) Desso, Thomas Mahoney, and Norman Koonce. Lil's family would like to especially thank Dr. Dennis Sanders at Vermont Cancer Center Medicine and his staff who provided Lil with outstanding and compassionate care. Special thanks too for the Visiting Nurses Association and their Hospice Services that allowed Lil to spend her final days with family and friends in the comfort of her home. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Minor Funeral and Cremation Center, Route 7 in Milton. A funeral service will be conducted at the Jericho Center Congregational Church on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Peter Anderson officiating. Online condolences may be made at www.minorfh.com. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Home Care Program, 1110 Prim Rd., Colchester, VT 054466405; or to Essex Rescue Inc., 1 Educational Dr., Essex Junction, VT 054523172.

Lil is still in our hearts. We think of her every time we pass the store, and still refer to it as "Desso´s." Lil will ever be a part of us...how we care for others, notice when something is needed, listen, lend a hand. By her compassionate example, Lil gave Jericho and Underhill a caring attitude and a deep and abiding sense of community. May Lil go from strength to strength in the Light of Love.

Sorry to hear about Lil's passing. I worked with her at Smilie back in 2003-2004, plus later when I was a substitute teacher. I'm sorry to have missed the service; I just recently learned of her death and only then learned she had been sick. She was a tender soul, who will be missed by all who knew her.

Dear Gerry, Kim and Karen,
We are so sad to hear of your loss. And what a tremendous loss. Lil was a very special person, who was never seen without a smile. I have so many fond memories of my childhood in Jericho and the many trips to "Dessos Store". . . always a highlight of our days. She was always so kind to us kids, and as we grew up and went our own way, she still kept in touch with us with her very special Christmas cards. She was so kind to our family, especially during the time we dealt with the loss of our older brother. You, of course, know more than we do of how special Lil was, may these memories of her fill your hearts with peace. I feel blessed and thankful to have known her. Please know that you are all in our prayers for peace and comfort during this most difficult time. With love, Rick and Denise (Cote) Carter & family

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

"And the storekeeper says to all the world, 'Good-night.'"

Our hearts are with Gerry and all Lil's loved ones, joining those who love Lil and benefited in so many ways by her kindness, hospitality and generosity. Our family's history was enriched by trips to Desso's in our growing up years: the 15 cents Drawer, coffee and donuts on the way to work, picking up the mail from our PO Box (even on a Sunday), Hallowe'en, the Christmas Room, the coveted tin of Christmas cookies, cards at birthdays and other special moments, book signings and so much more. We came to love Jericho because we loved Desso's Store, and Lil was the heart of Desso's. We recall how the luminarias around the green on Christmas Eve would choke her up. We recall the time a child came in after school for candy and Lil dialed the child's mom for permission, how she would let children put toys on layaway. Her way of approaching Community was a great role model and teacher. Her legacy is in each one of us, and we are grateful for a life kindly lived.

May Lil rest in peace and always be in our hearts. ♥

When God reached down
And collected her soul
She reached up knowing
She had to go

Slipping away peacefully
Her body remained
One final look back
She smiled

Reaching home again
A place she?d forgot
Past memories came flooding
With splendor and awe

God gave back sights
We can not imagine
She finally found
Her home Heaven

We remember her daily
She does the same
We Love her always
It will never change

When it?s my time to go
There is one thing I know
That she will be smiling
All the way home
