Walter Grant Obituary

Walter William Grant

Age: 87 • Colchester

Walter William Grant passed away quietly and peacefully on January 19, 2017 at Respite House in Colchester, Vermont. He was 87. His heart had been failing for several months.

Walter lived in Williston after living in Shelburne for many years. He was born in 1928 to Thomas W. Grant and Lillian Baskin Grant, both of whom had immigrated to the United States form County Donegal in Ireland. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia and his son James. He is survived by his special friend Peggy Larson of Williston and by his son Jeffrey of Jacksonville, Florida.

Walter was educated in Massachusetts public schools and enlisted in the US Navy when he graduated from North Quincy (MA) High School in 1945. He trained as a pilot as the war ended. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in October of 1947 and attended Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Upon his graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps and was commissioned as a second lieutenant at Parris Island in September of 1951. He then served as platoon leader with the First Marine Division during the Korean War. His duty assignment was north of Inchon where some of the fighting was intense. Upon return to the United States, he continued on active duty with the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and later at several other posts in the United States.

Walter went back to college and earned an MBA degree from George Washington University while in the Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1960.

In civilian life, he worked at Republic Steel Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio. He then moved to Vermont where he served as a financial controller and/or treasurer for several manufacturing companies. He later became an independent consultant specializing in helping organizations/corporations to recover from unusual financial problems. He was a close friend of former Governor Richard Snelling and worked with him on specific issues.

He was active in various community organizations, but his favorite was the Donald Cook Detachment of the Marine Corps League and its Toys for Kids program. He also served on various committees at the University of Vermont Medical Center to improve patient care at that facility.

Walter's body will be cremated and his ashes will reside on the mantel of his home along with the ashes of his son and his wonderful dog, Perrita. Eventually all of their ashes will be scattered to the winds along with Peggy and other friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Jimi Grant Scholarship Fund at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont would be greatly appreciated.

A memorial will be held at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel on Shelburne Road in Burlington on August 13, 2017 at the time of the family reunion to accommodate out of town guests. Seven years since you left our home in Williston. So much has changed. The home has been sold but the memories remain. Your friends and family still miss you, Walter. You will never be forgotten.

Walter, you will always be remembered. When we played cards last night, we talked about you and how important you were to all of us. Your subtle humor will always be remembered. Hard to believe you have been gone from the planet for 5 years.

Hard to believe you have left this earth 4 years ago. Seems like yesterday. All of our friends and I continue to remember you every day. Especially your wonderful smile. You will never be forgotten, Walter.

Walter, we all miss you and love you. We remember your broad smile and your wonderful personality. And your little dog, Perrita. Your John Deere tractor is in good hands and Bernie's sticker is still on the bucket loader. You left this world too soon, Walter.

CHAMP (Champlain Adaptive Mounted Program) sends our condolences to Walt's family. Walt served on CHAMP's Board of Directors. His calm approach to any issue was greatly appreciated by all. His focus was always on the riders, questioning what could be done to improve their experience. His wonderful smile was a joy to all. CHAMP was fortunate to have had Walt on the Board.

I met Walter when he joined a stakeholder advisory group for a research project at the University of Vt. I was just beginning my new job and he was such a fabulous support and voice of wisdom for me. His sense of humor set me at ease and his sincere kindness made the work so rewarding. I will always remember him walking in to meetings in his bomber jacket and his beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. Please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers for peace and joy in celebrating his life.

I enjoyed and am honored to have met and worked with Walt on a Patient and Family Centered Care at the UVMMC. He brought so much to the table and into our hearts .. honor, integrity, insightfulness and of course, his humor and twinkle in his eye. Peggy, my heart goes out to you and Walt's family.
