WILFRED BEAUDOIN Obituary

WILFRED BEAUDOIN BURLINGTON - Wilfred (Willie) Joseph Beaudoin, 84, of Burlington passed away in his home on Aug. 18, 2009, after a long illness. He was born in Dracut, Mass. on July 31, 1925, to Joseph and Anna Beaudoin. In 1937, his family moved to Burlington, where he attended St. Anthony's Church and School. Wilfred enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving on an aircraft carrier during World War II. After the war, he joined the Vermont Air Guard as a Traditional Guardsman. He married his penpal, Lillian Grenier of Lowell, Mass. in 1946 and was blessed with four children, Pauline Beaudoin of Colorado Springs, Colo., Diane Nichols and husband David of Charlotte, Vt., Roger Beaudoin and wife Poli of Chapin, S.C., and Nancy Sakamoto and husband Nate of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was Pepere to 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. His employment history began with his dad Joseph at Champlain Radiator. In 1950, he became a proud member of the Burlington Police Dept., and in 1963 to 1968, became an investigator for the Burlington Welfare Dept. For the next 15 years, he was an automobile salesman and retired with The Burlington Electric Dept. Willie loved music. As a jazz guitarist, he fronted a dance combo for 25 years performing at various local clubs, fraternities and weddings. Along with his brother Louis and other family members, he played guitar and fiddle with La Famille Beaudoin, a traditional French Canadian music group who not only entertained at several concerts and festivals in the New England area, but were also invited to perform at President Carter's inauguration, the Smithsonian Institute and several other venues. After Louis' death in 1980, Willie was encouraged to continue the tradition that he loved so much. They performed on the Prairie Home Companion show, the Andy Williams Christmas Special at Shelburne Museum and various folk festivals. Willie continued experiencing his love for music by getting together with his many musician friends from Quebec who will greatly miss his guitar accompaniment. He also enjoyed playing music at the Florida retirement community, where he and his wife spent their winter months until 2001. Along with his love of music, Willie enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying. He has owned several aircraft during his flying years and also served on the Airport Commission from 1972 to 1983. Willie was a lifetime member of The Elks Club, loved talking politics whenever he found someone with a listening ear, and was a handy man who was always looking for projects around his and his childrens' homes. Wilfred is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Anna, and brothers, Louis, Robert and Alfred. Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with an Elks service at 7 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Ready Funeral Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony Parish, 305 Flynn Avenue on Monday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m., with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery, So. Burlington. I just tucked my young son into bed and told him about my friend Willie. When I was a young girl at the fiddle contests there was a handsome man with wonderful hair and a pretty guitar. He was awesome. We would see each other behind stage and always make time to play a few tunes together. He wasn't like most guitar player whose finger hand just stayed at the end of the fingerboard. No! His fingers would make patterns up and down the neck of the instrument. It was as fun to watch as it was to hear. What a different sound from the pianos that I was used to. I knew this was a very special time and felt lucky. Playing with him in the sun-filled, grassy fields of Vermont and the echoing auditoriums of the contests made me feel like the best little fiddler in the world. Ah, thinking about those days fills my heart and I am glad we were friends. I know that there will be a great jam session in Heaven. I will be listening for a Gm7 chord in the wind.

My loving condolences to Lillian and all the Beaudoin family on their loss. I missed being there today very much and have had you all in my thoughts for the past week, playing many tunes Willie loved at our French camp with fellow Legacy fiddler George Wilson. Willie was a great player with a welcoming twinkle in his eye and often made sure I was invited to the jam after fiddle contests. It meant a lot to a young fiddler unsure of her place in the world.

Hugs to all the family and much love to you all!

Dear Lillian and family,
I was so sad to hear of Willie's passing. The service was beautiful and Roger and the girls did the Beaudoin family proud. When they played the CD of Willie playing, it brought tears to my eyes. He had a God given talent and he shared that gift with so many people. I have so many fond memories of the jam sessions at your house when my Dad, Frank grow, was still alive. I loved to hear Willie play the guitar and I always requested Le Vien Rose. And then there were the after contest parties at the Northeast Fiddler's Contest, in someone's motor home on the hill at the Barre Auditorium. So many times Willie would play back-up for Gramham Townsend and the music just flowed till the wee hours of the morning. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and with Louie's girls too. I'm so happy to have known the Beaudoin family and to have had the experience of sharing music with all of you. Take solace in the fact that Willie and Louie are now making beautiful music in Heaven. The Angels must be dancing and having a ball.
Love,
Lu-Ann

I offer my family's deepest sympathy and heart felt condolences to the La Famille Beaudoin during this time of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Do not despair, Willie is with his loving God and his grace is with you in this time of need. It was with pleasure and pride that I had the opportunity to play, share and perform our deep tradition of French Canadian Fiddle Music with you and our extended family. I learned a lot about music from Willie and will never forget the times that we spent playing together. Although we have lost a great steward of our heritage, we must use his inspiration, love of music and family to continue passing it on to future generations. In this, we preserve his spirit and our love of what and whom we are.

Dear Lillian and all of Willy's family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of loss! Willy's was a devoted father and husband, talented musician, a great story teller, and he always had that knowing smile. We will miss him but know that a new jazz guitarist has hit the scene to make his music with the many that came before him.
All our very best,

Be assured that our prayers are with the Beaudoin family at this time of mourning. Since our daughter married into the Beaudoin family 5 years ago, we have been included in some of the best Christmas Eve gatherings ever at Willie and Lillie's house and thoroughly enjoyed our La Famillie Beaudoin experiences with all the great music, food, conversation and laughter. That is how we will always remember Willie - with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Best to all, Jim & Kathy Bushnell, Austin, TX
