DAN ARCHDEACON Obituary

DAN STEVEN ARCHDEACON - BURLINGTON - Dan Steven Archdeacon, a beloved husband, father and son, brother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015. He spent his final moments at home, surrounded by loved ones. Dan was born in Dayton, Ohio, on May 11, 1954. He spent his early years in Centerville, Ohio, and went on to earn a B.A. at Earlham College (1975) and a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the Ohio State University (1980), where he wrote a groundbreaking and highly cited dissertation entitled, "A Kuratowski Theorem for the Projective Plane." In 1982, he moved to Vermont and joined the faculty of the University of Vermont. Recognized as a leading expert in topological graph theory, Dan published over 70 articles, was an invited speaker at mathematics conferences across the globe (including, just last month, in Slovenia) and held the position of visiting professor at universities in New Zealand, Japan, Denmark, and England. He also helped shape the development of scholar- ship in his field: a prodigious reviewer, he served on the editorial boards of several professional journals. In 2003-04, he was honored by UVM as a University Scholar. Dan especially enjoyed mentoring young scholars. He remained profoundly dedicated to his students and passionate about his field, even in the last days of his life. Dan taught a wide variety of courses and had a unique talent for turning difficult mathematical concepts into fun puzzles. Dan had many loves in his personal life. An avid skier at Mad River Glen and fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Dan also enjoyed kayaking on the lake near his Vermont home, hiking in the Green Mountains, and traveling the world with his wife, Mara. He was exceptionally sharp and witty, with a keen sense of humor. Dan was driven by an unwavering sense of duty - to his work, to his family, and to his friends; he never failed to follow through on his commitments and was ever devoted to the wellbeing of the many people he cared for in life. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mara Saule; sons, Talis and Nick; siblings, Jim, Bill and spouse, Carol, and Rebecca Houser and husband, Dan; brother-inlaw, Peter Saule and sister-in-law, Michele; nine nieces and nephews; and his mother, Ethel Jean. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Frank Archdeacon. A memorial service will be held at UVM's Ira Allen Chapel on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at 4 p.m. To send online condolences, please visit www.cremationsocietycc.com. The family wishes to thank Dr. Steven Ades, and the many physicians, nurses, and staff at the Vermont Cancer Center and the Visiting Nurse Association who helped him during these last months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dan Archdeacon Memorial Fund to support graduate students in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Vermont.

I graduated Electrical Engineering in 1987. Professor Archdeacon was one of my favorite math teachers for sure! Very clever and witty guy who knew how to make complex math fun.

We are so sad to hear Dan had passed away. We remember those days when Dan and Nick stayed here, and the enjoyable dinner at a restaurant together with Mara and Talis. Dan was so kind and warm-hearted, always encouraged our students and gave good advice. We would like to thank him and send our sincere condolences to Mara, Talis and Nick.

A sad news of professor Dan Archdeacon passing away has reached our department. I remember first meeting him at a SIAM DM conference in Victoria, where he chaired the afternoon graph theory session, in a lecture room with no AC. He opened the session with "We have the proof that Graph Theory is the hottest topics in discrete math!" This cheer and optimism did not leave him in his recent visit to Maribor, where he was eager to combine the joy of math with the vistas over the ski slopes of Pohorje. Unfortunately, his wish to ski there at some later day will not come true, but he will always stay in our memories. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Mara, Deborah and I are absolutely stunned by news of Dan's death. Our love to you and the boys. I know it was a full life filled with love and laughter, but too short. Hold each other as we'll hold you in our thoughts.

I was in high school when Dan and my brother, Jeff Dinitz, were roommates in graduate school at Ohio State. I was a pretty cool high school kid driving up to campus to go to their parties and hang out with them. Dan was a very fun person and he will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to you, Mara.

Dear Mara,
I am so sorry to hear about Dan's passing. He was a remarkable person and a terrific colleague. I always felt that being on the same university campus as Dan was an honor -- he added luster to an already fine institution. We are all sorry to lose him. Marge Lipson

Professor Archdeacon loved cracking jokes just as much as he loved teaching Math. He was the reason I decided to major in Mathematics.

Dan was a great friend and it was too bad that we never wrote a paper together. Thank you for getting me interested in topological aspects of design theory.

Dan was one of the first people I met when I started graduate school back in the '80s, and he was a kind friend, major influence, wonderful collaborator, and tireless mentor and advocate. He gave gentle and highly apt advice through all stages of my career. I will be forever indebted and forever grateful.

My deepest sympathy to Mara and Dan's sons. Dan's exemplary service as chair of the all-important Faculty Senate Committee on Professional Standards made him a gatekeeper for those UVM faculty members seeking tenure and promotion to full professor. It is a post that requires both a commitment to UVM's high academic standards and compassion for those faculty members seeking advancement. Dan had a fortuitous combination of both and we at UVM are the beneficiaries of Dan's wise and gentle counsel. Thank you.

Dan was acting as chair of the CS department when I was hired and his warmth was a big part of why I chose to come to UVM originally.

Dan's wife, Mara, was my boss and frient while I was at UVM. The strength of her love of Dan and their children was evident in her everyday life and was an inspriation to me. She loved him so. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the famly. It was a life well lived.

Dan loved being a father He was happiest wrestling with 5 kids at a time in his backyard. All children were Dan's children. Two babies on his lap, three hanging from him while he lumbered around the yard--this was Dan in his glory. The most gentle and patient and loving of fathers. My heartfelt condolences to Nick and Talis and to all their boyhood friends who enjoyed Dan's celebration of life and its possibilities. Be like him.

I feel so lucky to have called him friend. Dan made me laugh, and think. He was as kind as he was smart. What a great legacy for his amazing sons.
