Kenneth Gaudette Obituary

Kenneth Earl Gaudette Jr

Vermont lost one of its last mountain men on Wednesday, March 9th, 2016. Kenneth Earl Gaudette Jr, more commonly known as Kenny G, or Grampy, took his last walk onto his beloved Shelburne Pond a day too late in the season. Born January 17th, 1949 to Kenneth and Lily (Greer) Gaudette, Kenny spent his childhood and teen years relishing the beauty of Vermont's great outdoors. Known in his youth to raise a little hell with some Shelburne's finest young men (you know who you are), it did take a little while for Kenny to grow up. He actively served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He turned a childhood hobby into a career as an iron welder and was employed by CCS for many years. With Linda (Hance) he became the proud father of Dorilee (Gaudette) LeBlanc and Lyman Gaudette, the joys of his life. It wasn't until he gained his sobriety that life's value became clear. His sobriety was a source of pride for him and he recently celebrated his 25 year chip.

An avid fisherman, Kenny fished every lake, pond, river, and creek he could find, but Shelburne Pond was his second home. He loved the freedom of being on the water and was always hungry for one more bite. Walleye was his favorite fish to catch; Kenny was honored to win 1st place in this division in the 2012 L.C.I Derby. Kenny made friends with as many people on water as he did on land and was known to leave a lasting impression. He had a zest and appreciation for life that was both rare and commendable. Unafraid to be his unique self, he inspired everyone around him to be who they are (while sometimes embarrassing his kids). The last six years of his life you could see were his happiest. He was living his retired life fully immersed in the wilderness and the lives of his grandchildren.

Kenny began hunting and trapping before most kids these days are potty trained. He finally dropped the Phantom, his elusive trophy buck after years of close encounters. He never let a part of an animal go without use. His creativity flourished when he began to create handmade hide hunting wear and accessories, which he sported during biathlons. His garb was so impressive he was featured in the Boston Globe and Chicago Tribune wearing it. He knew how to survive off the land and enjoyed sharing the knowledge with anyone who wanted to shoot the breeze.

His life was devoted to his children, Lyman and Dorilee, and her husband Brett. His grandchildren Anderson, Weston, and Adelyn, were the lights of his life. He was eager to take them aboard the Misfit and share with them his knowledge of the waters. He always took the time to get down on their level and play. No one will ever compare to Grampy in their eyes. His appreciation for the outdoors will forever live on in their hearts. He is survived by his siblings, Mary, Larry (Marlies), Gloria, Maurice (Mud and Sharon), Joe, and army of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Some of his best days were hunting and fishing with his brothers. His partner in crime, Clyde Bovat was a brother to him and was his rock, confidant; his best friend in every way. Ronnie Bovat was like second son who he enjoyed many hunting adventures with. Tim Tenney worked hard to keep Kenny road worthy. Jamie Bissonette was a source of strength for Kenny during his road to sobriety. The bond between Doug and George Lavalette and Kenny lasted his lifetime. Doug Therrian, Brian LaBell, Brian Fillion, The Carol Brothers, Levine's, Casewells and so many more, you enriched our father's life, and we thank you.

A special thanks to Dana Joyal for risking his life for Kenny. Dana was a man Kenny respected and admired. His family is glad he is recovering from his selfless act of heroism.

Living in Shelburne nearly all his life, his passing is a loss the whole community will feel. Join us for a Celebration of Life on Friday, March 18, 2016 from 4-8pm at Shelburne United Methodist Church. Formal prayer at 7:30. Please bring a hand written or typed story about Kenny to leave with his children. A man will live on as long as stories of him are shared. We already miss his infamous story telling. I was so sorry to hear of Kenny's passing.
He was such a good friend during our growing up in the 60's. What a wonderful heart he had, always looking out for others while we roamed the fields and roads in our youth.

So grateful for having him in my life. I've always thought of him and always will.

Best to the family and friends.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Kenny many years ago when he worked for PC and CSE. He was such a character!! I have to say his obituary was the best I have ever read and once you read it you understand what a fun and generous person he was. I had not seen him in many years but had seen him recently many times as he was such a good friend of a mutual friend(Mr. Barr). He was so proud of his children and his grandchildren were his whole life. He will be missed but you can cherish your memories and smile.

Dorilee, Lyman and the Family.
I first met Kenny at our Optometry Office on Cherry St in Burlington probably back in the 90's when he would come in for an exam and glasses, and often before that my Uncle, Dr Rist, did the same ( 88 Yrs in that location). Being an avid fisherman myself, I think I learned more about fishing the Big Lake and rivers from Kenny than I ever thought possible. One visit, Kenny brought in a nice piece of Venison which Dr Rist and I enjoyed so much. One occasion I was helping a UVM girl with her glasses, when in came Kenny with his Fur hat outfit. She told me later that Kenny's outfit was the "neatest" thing she's seen since being at UVM, and how much she enjoyed meeting Kenny! Kenny was one of a kind and I'm so sorry for your loss. For my Uncle Gilbert Rist (1915-2012) , Dr Gilbert Suitor.

Dorilee, Lyman and Family;
We are sorry to know of Kenny G.'s tragic death. May he rest in peace.
We will remember him as a genuine Vermonter who loved his family and all that the land and waters offered him. Kenny was a good person and always jolly when he stopped in to join the guys at the Montgomery deer camp or for a meal at The Dutch Mill Restaurant.
Prayerful thoughts are being sent your way------

Kenney was such a good man and an ever thoughtful neighbor. Occasionally would stop by on his way home after fishing, so excited over the days catch & size, having to share the moment and sometimes a generous piece of fish too. He loved his family and grandchildren immensely and spoke often of spending time with them in the great outdoors teaching all about nature. My heart is broken for his family's tragic loss. He surely will be missed by many.

March 15, 2016

It is with great sadness that we send our condolences to the Gaudette family. Kenny was a great neighbor and friend to us. He was always willing to give us a helping hand and share his catches of the day. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. R.I.P friend and neighbor.

Kenny and I were fishing buddies. He took me out on the misfit many times, 1 time the waves were 4 feet, he asked "you ok, not scared are you" . I was not afraid because we had a trust in each other that could not be rivaled anywhere. We had the utmost trust and mutual respect for each other. He would come to my house early in the morning, we would sit in his truck and have coffee in the drive way. He love looking at my Eastern Wild turkeys less than a foot from him.
Kenny my life will never be the same with out you in it. My love always, Vikie

I grew up with Kenny, Maurice, and Mary. I knew the whole family but I knew them the best. It has been many years since growing up in Shelburne but I remember all of them. I am very sorry for your loss but with his memory he will always be there with you.

March 14, 2016

I fondly remember Kenny as a friend and customer. I often recall the times that Kenny would stop in at my business to share this latest hunting or fishing adventure. I never saw Ken when he wasn't fully animated and in the mood to bring me or anybody along with him for a recap of his latest episode. Kenny was always willing to share, and had a kindness that was expressed through the respect that he had for friends and nature.

It's been many years! Kenny Was 1 of the 1st people My brother and I met in those woods in Shelburne as boys(15,14) down by the Laplatte River while we fished a hole giving us pointers on how to catch the bass And later where to hunt as long as we didn't shoot the Ghost everyone wanted. He will be missed.~~

I don't recall having ever met Kenny, but this beautifully written obituary gives me a wonderful insight into his life. I'd like to think that obituaries like this, with beauty marks and all, do a great service to Kenny and to those who knew him, or like me, wish they had known him.

I'm Still HereFriend, please don't mourn for meI'm still here, though you don't see.I'm right by your side each night and dayand within your heart I long to stay.My body is gone but I'm always near.I'm everything you feel, see or hear.My spirit is free, but I'll never departas long as you keep me alive in your heart.I'll never wander out of your sight-I'm the brightest star on a summer night.I'll never be beyond your reach-I'm the warm moist sand when you're at the beach.I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes aroundand the pure white snow that blankets the ground.I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond,The clear cool water in a quiet pond.I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring,The first warm raindrop that April will bring.I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine, and you'll see that the face in the moon is mine. When you start thinking there's no one to love you,you can talk to me through the Lord above you.I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees, and you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weepand the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.I'm the smile you see on a baby's face.Just look for me, friend, I'm everyplace!
