Besides his love of God and his family, Doug had many interests including music (singing and playing the guitar) and aviation.

A lover of the outdoors, he was involved in local trail maintenance and hiked all over the U.S., having just a few hundred miles left to hike of the Appalachian Trail.
He currently served on the board of the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy and was a member of the North Country Trail Association and the Slippery Rock Rotary Club. He was president of the board of Meals on Wheels in the North Hills for 20 years and the former board president of Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry (formerly North Hills Youth Ministry).
He was a firefighter with Bradford Woods Fire Department for decades and also served as their chaplain. An Eagle Scout, Doug also was involved with Boy Scout troops in the Wexford area for many years, serving as a leader and chaplain, and has worked with Troop 310 locally.
He loved to travel by car as well as plane and over the years drove his family in their Roadmaster station wagon to all 49 states in the continental U.S. He also "collected things" and enjoyed his hobbies of stamp, coin and baseball card collecting and especially showing off his beloved Lionel trains.

Dear Daphne, I am so sorry for your loss. I can't believe it has been almost 30 years since I met Doug, when he came to study Hebrew with me at the JCC in Pittsburgh with Reverends Doug Patterson and Howard Burrell. What a lot of fun we had, and how much we enjoyed the get-togethers we had with spouses included. So much laughter. Michael joins me in sending our condolences, he was a lovely man.

We had Doug in our Sunday Schol class in Wellesley Baptist Church, Wellesley, Mass., and have fond and lasting memories of him during those high school years. We appreciated his brother and sister, as well as his mother, church organist, and his father's [Phil's] humor. We are saddened, but thankful for a live well served in the service of God and Christ Jesus our Lord. -- Carol and Fred Miller, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, formerly of Needham, Mass. for 12 years ending in 1979.

I enjoyed our time together singing in the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, and I am sure that many other Chorale members join in sending condolences to Daphne and family members whom we do not know, since we shared only one facet of his many-faceted life.

What a beautiful obituary for a beautiful man. He gave His all to those less fortunate. The Blueberry Hill residents with sickness loved Doug. He always had time to visit the sick. It didn't matter what their religion was. He was loved. He was someone who lived as Jesus told us to. It was a privledge to have known Him.

So very sad to hear of Pastor Turners passing. He was a wonderful man and my family and myself will never forget all the times he was there for us. He performed my son's and my brother's weddings also performed my niece's christening and was there for us when our loved ones had passed on. Rest in peace Doug you will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Daphne and the rest of his family.

We will never forget the years of friendship and spiritual support from both Doug and Daphne. Doug performed our joyous wedding. With his beautiful tenor voice I am sure that he is singing in the heavenlies.

Doug meant the world to me as we took the journey of Sue Miller's life and death together. He often came to our home to have lunch with Sue and they had a wonderful friendship. Doug was my rock when Sue died and together we were the last two people to visit with her hours before her passing. I owe him so much. He was a true minister inevery sense of the word.

When the Turners moved in across the street and Doug became Pastor of their church, my parents looked after them. When my Father died, Doug looked after our Mother for 21 years. A kindness our family is forever grateful.

We all were so saddened to hear of Pastor Doug's passing on Tuesday. He was a tireless servant of God and was so kind and good to us all in the passing of our husband and father, John Murphy not long ago. We can rejoice that Pastor is no longer suffering. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Nancy Murphy, Megan, Claire and Beth and families.
