Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 9 to Apr. 11, 2006.
STADELBAUER _ Helen Helen Stadelbauer was born on December 20 in 1910, reared in Calgary and died on April 6, 2006. She received her formal art training at the Alberta College of Art (four years) under the tutelage of H.G. Glyde in addition to six summer sessions at the Banff School of Fine Arts under noteworthy artists such as A.Y. Jackson, Walter Phillips, Charles Comfort and several others. She also studied at the State University of Iowa under Professor Longman who built the strongest program of Art History in the U.S. and at Mt. Allison University under Alex Colville and Lauren Harris. She then enrolled at Columbia University in New York where she completed all of the course work for a PhD. She also holds a full diploma from the Royal Drawing Society in London, England. Helen was an instructor of art at the Calgary Normal School which became the University of Calgary where in the beginning she was a one-person art department. She then set up the Faculty of Fine Arts for the University of Calgary. As the university expanded, Helen became the administrative officer and designed the programs and facilities for the model she found at Columbia University. During her thirty-one years with the University of Calgary she fought for the art programs as well as the autonomy of the university itself. She retired from the University in 1989. Helen travelled extensively throughout Europe and Asia, visiting art galleries and studying art education programs. She has also been a member of countless associations including the national art societies in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. She held a lifetime membership in the Alberta Society of Artists. Helen's paintings were influenced by avant guard artists including Vasarely, Bridget Riley, the Group of Seven and others, as well as her life's experiences. She executed hundreds of drawings, paintings and prints, from the time of her early schooling when she also studied music and dance and loved mathematics and science. Her papers and art works are preserved in the Library at the University of Calgary. Helen is predeceased by her sister, Isabel and her parents, Josephine and Simon Stadelbauer. She lived her final ten years at the Wentworth Manor, where she moved from Lakeland Village in 1996, and received excellent care.
