RAEBURN, Andrew July 22, 1933 - August 24, 2010 Andrew Raeburn passed away peacefully from cancer at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary on August 24, 2010. Born in London, England, Andrew brought music to the world throughout his life. He studied violin, piano and organ from an early age, and was awarded a Master's degree in History from King's College, Cambridge, where he sang in the Chapel Choir and was conductor of two chamber choirs. His varied professional life in the arts spanned more than five decades and included management and artistic administration with orchestras, close associations with distinguished conductors, the production of nearly 100 classical recordings as music director of two record companies, as well as the artistic direction of two international piano competitions, including Calgary's Honens International Piano Competition from 1993 until his retirement in 2004. He was also a consultant to orchestras, dance companies, festivals, music competitions, other non-profit organizations and government funding agencies, and was an occasional performer, competition juror, writer, lecturer and broadcaster. He received several honours and awards, including an Honorary Diploma in Musical Performance from Mount Royal College, the Rozsa Special Achievement Award for exceptional accomplishment in arts management, an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Calgary and a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the vitality of the international classical music community from the World Federation of International Music Competitions. Andrew was preceded by brother Christopher and is survived by siblings David (Mary Faith), Antonia Jefferson, Ruth Hayter, Elizabeth (Rodney Lawrence) and Michael (Marilyn McCully); nieces and nephews, Adam, Alexandra, Andreas, Anthony, Belinda, Camilla, Charlotte, Christina, Fiona Haydon, Isabella, Mark, Martin, Olivia and Sam; and cherished family friend, Anita Besson. Andrew, his family and friends thank Drs. Matt van Olm and Jeannette Soriano-Grondin and the nurses at Rockyview General Hospital's Unit 94 for their kindness and compassion. Funeral Services will take place at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (1121 - 14 Avenue S.W., Calgary) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. At Andrew Raeburn's request, please forward condolences by visiting www.leydens.com in lieu of flowers.
