Raelene SCHMALTZ Obituary

Raelene of Beiseker, Alberta passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the age of 51 years. Raelene was born and raised on the family farm in Beiseker, Alberta. After finishing high school, she went on to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated at the top of her class as a Registered Nurse from the Foothills Hospital. Shortly after graduating, Raelene fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling, and spent several months living and working in Denmark and Australia. While there, she made many life-long friends, which she would often return to visit. Raelene worked for several years as a nurse at the University of Alberta Hospital, and most recently, at the Strathmore General Hospital. As a young girl, Raelene was active in 4-H beef, clothing, and horse club. Raelene had a love for horses and riding, and took any opportunity she could to enjoy her horses. In recent years, she was able to share that love with Ralph, and together they enjoyed taking their horses to the mountains. Her life's greatest moment was the birth of her daughter. She dedicated her life to the care and well being of Taylor, who brought her great joy and happiness. Raelene understood the importance of contributing to her community and touched many people with her kindness. She was always "on call" to those in the community who needed some help from a nurse, and friend. Raelene had a gift, and whether it was a medical emergency, or simply setting up for 4-H, those around her felt grounded by her presence. Raelene could often be found reading, tending to her garden, taking photographs of her family and friends, or helping her Mom. Raelene is survived by her beloved companion Ralph, her daughter Taylor, parents Clarence and Eilleen Schmaltz of Beiseker, sister Charlene (Stu), brother Cameron, nieces and nephews Murray, Kristine, Jake, Bobby, Sara, Anna, and Tyrell, Taylor's father Brian Konschuh, Taylor's grandparents, Jim and Edith Konschuh and dear family friends, Jim and Myrna Richards, and their children. Funeral Services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church (Beiseker, Alberta) on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to S.T.A.R.S. (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society), Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 8M7 (Telephone 403-295-1811, www.stars.ca). In living memory of Raelene Schmaltz, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.

I am very sorry to hear of Raelene's terrible accident - this must be a very difficult time for all of you. I remember all those many visits to the farm when we were kids, and the way Raelene would always make us feel very welcome - although we lost touch over the years, I will always remember the fun we had with the horses, and her "motherly instincts" even back then to protect us from the Bieseker boys. Fond memories of her always.

Words cannot describe the sorrow we felt when we learned about this tragedy. Raelene was a genuine good person - she was always there for others - she was like a sister to me, since we met 27 years ago on our way to Australia.

I have known Raelene since since she started at Strathmore hospital, she was a brilliant RN, and countless times as a member of Wheatland EMS I handed over or took over care of patients from her. We shared many laughs during those trials and tribulations. She will be deeply missed, I am so sorry and shocked to her of this terrible tragedy. Raelene was a breathe of fresh air and a pleasure to work along side.
