John BLUMELL Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Nov. 7 to Nov. 8, 2013.
BLUMELL, John
1956 – Magrath, AB
2013 – Calgary, AB
It is with great sadness that we announce that John, beloved husband of Barbara Blumell (née Ogden) of Calgary, AB, passed away on November 3, 2013 at the age of 57 years. John was born May 15, 1956 in Magrath, Alberta
to Emerson and Lois, and was the youngest of their six children. As a child, he moved to Calgary, where he lived the rest of his life. At age 19 John was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, an often painful disease, which he managed with fortitude and with what he referred to as his PMA - positive mental attitude. On August 13, 1977, John married his high school sweetheart Barb Ogden in the Cardston, Alberta LDS Temple. They have six children and John felt that his greatest accomplishment was the family they raised together. John completed his B. Comm and CMA designation and enjoyed his career in accounting. John was very involved in the Scouting program throughout his life and he passed on his love of the outdoors to many young people, especially his children. John loved to dance and a favorite family memory is dancing with John in the living room. John was always warm, approachable, fun and energetic. He had an ability to love everyone unconditionally. Besides his loving wife, John is survived by his children Sarah (Brent) Bieber, Jennifer (Chad) Simmonds, Jason (Melissa) Blumell, Laura (Chris) Stephan, Katie (Greg) Pecharsky, and Scott (Kirsten) Blumell. "Papa John" will be fondly remembered by his 13 adoring grandchildren. John is also survived by his siblings and their families, Bruce (Jean) Blumell, Richard (Carmen) Blumell, Janine (Bruce) Barnard, Debbie (Greg) Sutor, and brother-in-law Judd Bunnage, as well as his father and mother-in-law, Gordon and Betty Ogden, and the extended Ogden family. After a brief battle with cancer, John is now reunited with his parents, Emerson and Lois Blumell, and his sister Linda Bunnage. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), today, November 8, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bow Valley Chapel (2526 - 24 Avenue N.W.), on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of John Blumell, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.

Barb, I was saddened to hear of John's passing. It has been a few years since I have seen you all, but I want you to know that John impacted my life. We had worked together as I started my career at Hycal and it was John's guidance and motivation that encouraged me to start investing. He was always a pleasant man and one I often refer to in stories of a great family man with an open heart and mind. my deepest sympathy,

To Barb and family,
I retired in June but Leslie, the secretary at school passed the news about John along to current and former staff. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband and dad. The times I met him and conversed with him were very enjoyable. He was a fine human being. My special memories of him were at our staff parties where he could hardly wait to hit the dance floor. Please convey my condolences and blessings to all.

Very, very sad to hear of John's passing. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know John during his years at the law firm of Masuch Albert LLP. Particularly fond memories include John's incessant need to dance whenever the opportunity presented itself, and teaming up with John and Barb to compete in the "Name That Tune" contests at the firm's Christmas parties at Heritage Pointe. John's smiling face and "PMA" will be long remembered and sorely missed.

I have known John ever since being a young kid. He was a close friend to our family. He was always kind to others and was always willing to put others needs before his own. Even with his health in poor shape he led hundreds of LDS youth through some pretty rough terrain in southern alberta for Trek. I was honoured to serve along side with him. I will miss John but am happy that he has gradutaed from this life and carried on his eternal journey. See you soon my friend.
