Mrs. Lewis was my grade 7 home room teacher at H.D. Taylor school. She also talk me how to play the flute in the band at the same school. I loved her as my teacher, she was so understanding and kind but didn't put
up with any silliness in class. She notice one day that I had put on make up (my 1st time) and asked if my mom knew.I lied and said yes (I had put it on in the school bathroom). She looked at me and said "is the makeup i had was cake or foundation? I said cake, like I knew the difference (Ha! Ha!)She looked at me and said that less was more and maybe my mom could help me with applying better.
She was so nice about it but I decided maybe I was a little too young for makeup so I never wore it again until years later.I still smile when I remember that day and realize she was
trying to be very delicate in the way she spoke about how I looked so she wouldn't embarass me. I loved her dearly as a teacher and will always remember her.

Vicki and I fondly remember our Saturday mornings spent with Grace Lewis at Taylor Public School. Although we attended in different years, Vicki and I met through music in the Windsor Community Concert Band. I still play drums today in many places with many musicians although Vicki has long "hung up" her trombone. The love for music by our families lives on through our son who has just recently begun a music career with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Orchestra. And this all came to pass because of a kind and caring woman aptly named Grace. HEY! Pedro, sit down! That one's for you Mrs. Lewis.

We are saddened to learn of Grace’s passing. She was our band teacher at Prince of Wales School (1967-69) and in grade 8 we were also in her West Side Band which rehearsed on Saturday mornings. From there Lynn and I played in the Forster Band. It can be said that Grace was the unsung hero of the Forster Band as the vast majority of the band members began learning their instruments with Grace. In more recent years my friendship with Grace deepened with our work as directors of handbell choirs. Her visits to Ottawa enabled us to get together, and only last October we had lunch together. Her strong Christian faith will prepare her for that heavenly podium on which Grace will conduct with grace, and all will play error-free, in tune and with her beat.

For years, people have asked me why I chose to play the tuba. I jokingly tell them that Mrs. Lewis suggested that perhaps I should give it a go after hearing my audition for the school choir. In retrospect, I think she could plainly see I was the only one in my Grade 7 class who was big enough to carry it home to practice. Well, here I am, 40 years later and still playing the tuba. In fact, just this morning I had the priviledge of playing a very special arrangement of "Amazing Grace" with the Chatham Concert Band. This particular arrangement is for solo tuba and concert band. I hope I did her memory justice.

My father Ronald Hinch knew Grace very well. I am sure they are both teaching music in heaven together again.

I attended Saturday Morning Band three years in a row and we had more than double the 60 members, cited in the article. Most important, however, was Mrs. Lewis' love of music and the ability to instill this passion in her students. Saturday Band was the highlight of the week for all the members - as much a social event as a learning session. Mrs. Lewis was able to use all this "raw teen energy" and sculpt it into real music even though many had just begun to learn their instrument. She had the patience of a saint but also commanded respect and dedication. Students without a certain minimal amount of musical aptitude quickly realized it on their own and didn't need Mrs. Lewis to weed them out. And those who excelled were featured in solo or small ensemble performances. I'm sure that many music careers, whether amateur or professional, were first discovered and nurtured by Mrs. Lewis, as she literally touched thousands of student's lives during her many years in the public school system. Dedicated and capable teachers like Mrs. Lewis are few and far between and I'm sure she will be greatly missed by all who had the priviledge of knowing her.

Mrs. Lewis taught music to me and I was part of Saturday band. Life in the sixties could be hard but participating in the music program was truly a joy. I am forever grateful for the gift of Mrs. Lewis in my life.

It is not often that a person is blessed to have known Grace Lewis on three occasions. As a music teacher at J.L. Forster Secondary School,I received a generation of her highly trained and motivated students. As a Co-ordinator of the Arts for the Windsor Board of Education I was motivated by Grace through her example as a dedicated, professional educator. As a friend, I was lucky to receive her guidance, encouragement, and understanding. Although I am saddened, I will cherish the memories of Grace Lewis as a most caring person.

I have the fondest memories of Saturday Morning band at Taylor and the performances at the Cleary in the 60's with Mrs. Lewis. She was a very special and dedicated teacher.

Grace was our good neighbour @ Caldwell Towers North, a busy charitable woman who brought joy to those she touched through her music and personality. Our chats were often in the basement garage when she would be leaving for the day on a Tuesday to work with her Seniors Band. It was good to know Grace. She was a blessing to many folks. We extend our sympathy to all those who loved and worked with her through the years.

Mrs. Lewis taught me the clarinet back in the late 60's. In Grade 7 & 8 I was in her Saturday morning band at Dr. H. D. Taylor school. I wish children today had the same opportunity we had to learn from such a dedicated person like Mrs. Lewis. I was sad to read of her passing.

We were looking forward to seeing her at the reunion this summer and are sorry to learn she has passed. She was a thoughtful and compassionate teacher who forgave us for our less than perfect performances.

Mrs. Lewis taught thousands of public school children (and many seniors as well) in the Windsor area how to play musical instruments - from trumpet and sax - to clarinet, baritone, flute, trombone and drums. She taught instrumental music to my 3 siblings and I, and to so many of my friends. I was privileged to have Mrs Lewis during 7th grade as a homeroom teacher as well, for subjects such as math and English. She was the best !
Intelligent, talented and loving: she will be sadly missed (and happily remembered) by thousands !
I am forever grateful for her gifts to me, my siblings and friends. God Bless Grace Lewis.
