William Tannehill Obituary

William "Bill" Tannehill 1924-2018

Bill's successful and satisfying life ended after 94 years on Wednesday at Aultman Hospital. He was known for his smiling wit and humor. In his retirement years he considered each day a success when he could bring a smile or be of help to someone.

Bill was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1924 to Dr. George and Letha (Shumaker) Tannehill. Both parents and sister, Kathryn are deceased. His 68-year marriage to smiling and loving wife Sara (Hood) ended with her death in 2017.

Bill and Sara were blessed with a wonderful family, who survive: devoted, reliable artist daughter Terry, "chip off the old block" golfer son Scott, both of North Canton; good-humored, industrious, retired teacher daughter Darcy (Mike) Gillespie of Newton Falls, Ohio; successful civil engineer grandson Ryan (Billie) Gillespie of Cortland, Ohio, athletic State Trooper grandson Matthew (Krista) Gillespie of Williamsburg, VA; grandson Christopher Dimos of Columbus, Ohio; talented great-granddaughter Rylie and "personality-kid" great-grandson Landon and loving niece, Paige Draher Raynor of California.

Bill was a 1942 graduate of Minerva High School and a 1948 graduate of Mount Union College. He also attended Baldwin Wallace College and Akron U. He was a member of ATO fraternity and was ATO president at both colleges. After World War II, where he served in the North Pacific, Bill retired from the Naval Reserve after 22 years of service.

Bill had an early eight year career at The Hoover Co. as a field auditor and in management accounting positions. He was later employed for 32 years as Chief Financial Officer of the Bernard Companies (construction, pipe-lines and commercial real estate) in Akron, Ohio.

He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a founding Elder and long-time Auditor. He was a member of the Military Officers Association and the Retired Officers Association. He was an early member of the Canton Junior Chamber of Commerce, Canton Toastmasters, Stark County Young Republicans, Canton- Massillon ATO Alumni Association (Founder). He was a former member of National Association of Cost Accountants, National Office Managers Association, and National Association of Business Budgeting.

He served several years as president of the Ohio Distribution Contractors Association. Bill was a long-time president of the Mount Union ATO Home Company.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday at 12 noon in Northminster Presbyterian Church in North Canton with Rev. Dr. Richard Holmes officiating. Calling hours will be held one hour prior from 11 am-12 noon. He will be laid to rest along with his wife, in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Northminster Presbyterian Church in North Canton. To send online condolences please visit www.reedfuneralhome.com

Dear Terry and family;
Condolences on the loss of your Dad. His love for you was palpable and was evident in the way you treated other people, and in the compassionate and loving way you live your life.
Your Dad was a man of strong character and principles. He was fiercely proud of you and all you accomplished.
May his memory always be for a blessing and may you know no more sorrow, please G-d.
Love always,
Cyndi
