Colla Powe Obituary

Colla Lamarr
"C.L." Powe
Colla Lamarr (C.L.) Powe was born to the late Reverend Collie Wesley Powe and Willie A. Harris Powe on July 12, 1920 in Buckatunna, Mississippi. He departed this life at Washington Hospital Center on May 16, 2006. C.L. accepted Christ as his personal savior at a young age, and was fellowshipped into the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church in Buckatunna, MS under the leadership of the late Reverend M.J. Barlow. He graduated from Meridian High School in Mississippi. C.L. moved to Ohio in 1939. He served in both the European and China-Burma-India theatres of operation in the U.S. Army and was assigned to administrative work serving in the capacity of sergeant major. He took administrative courses while in the service, and was honorably discharged in 1952. C.L. was employed for 26 years by the Supreme Liberty Life Insurance Company of America and was for many years the top salesman in Ohio. He attended Akron University. C.L. was united in holy matrimony to Juanita Currence. They were blessed with two children; Michael L. Powe and Renee (Powe) Butler. C.L. served on many community and civic boards, including the Canton Urban League, United Way, was President of the Stark County Council for Economic Opportunity, and was President of the NAACP. C.L. was a member of Preservation of Zion Fellowship in Fairfax Station, Virginia. He enjoyed the deep discussions he initiated in Sunday School. C.L. had always been an avid reader, but after he developed circulation problems in his legs, he stayed home and read everything he could get his hands on; especially the Bible, dictionary and newspapers from around the country. C.L. leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Juanita; two children, Michael L. Powe (Luisa I. Carreiro) and Renee Y. Butler; one grandson, Branden Michael Carreiro Powe; one brother, Shellie L. (Virginia) Powe of Aventura, Florida; three sisters, Jean N. Ogletree and Clementine Phifer, both of Canton, Ohio, and Helen M. (LeNae) Nicholson of Mobile, Alabama; one godchild, Rita Miles of California; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by four sisters; Omega Clark, Cozie Leverette, Theda Tharp and Willo T. Jones.
Psalm 25:
Remember your kindness, Lord, your love, that you showed long ago. Do not remember the sins of my youth, but rather with your love remember me. The Lord is so good, so upright. He teaches the way to sinners; in all that is right He guides the humble and instructs the poor in His way.
Homegoing services will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 1800 East Tusc., Canton, where Rev. Walter J. Arrington will be officiating and Rev.
