Patrick McCarthy

1940 - 2017

Pat was born in Pasadena Maryland in December 19, 1940. His parents were John Joseph McCarthy and Margaret "Limbach" McCarthy. Pat attended school for nine (9) years before he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged and after a multitude of labor intensive jobs, Pat joined the Fire Department in 1963 and climbed to the rank of "Lieutenant". He was always on the move and had multiple job endeavors such as: ice cream vender, detailing automobiles, and a horseshoe farrier. He went on to own McCarthy's Horseshoe Supply, and on to own Maryland's ?rst and only "Budget Blinds" franchise. He also was one of the very ?rst "Walmart greeters" at the new Middletown store. As ?rst at the door he gave men jokes, ladies hugs, and smiley stickers to children as they called him "Mr. Walmart." Fishing, hunting, and anything outside was interesting and attractive to Pat's adventure spirit. He loved everything and everyone and loved to make people laugh. There was always an adventure in all that he challenged himself to do. After the millions of people that have framed his life for 76 years, especially the home he found with the ?re department that molded him into who he is today as we remember, Pat says: "It is what it is." Patrick leaves behind his adopted family of the brave and proud men and women of the Baltimore City Fire Department, especially Engine #38 with brothers like John Mascari, Tim Timanis, Frank Kelly, Steve Wigman, and all the heroes he loved and bonded with. He was affectionately called "Luke"; and he served from 1963 until a forced medical retirement in1987. Patrick's dedicated love and support system of the last 30 years: his wife, Dolores (Dee) with step children and their families: Mike and Stacey Murphy; Diana and Jorge Acevedo with grandchildren Alexis, Dustin, Mercedes and Logan; Sharon and Scott Rowe and grandchildren Candice and Travis; and Steven Murphy and Jake Voshell with extended grandchildren Emily, Benjamin, Sophie and Gabriel. In Pat's last season of life he experienced the greatest form of sel?ess love from his health care conscientious family with the giving of their time. They consist of thoughtful neighbors, friends like Ed and Anne, acquaintances, and health helpers of nurses, aides, and loving caregivers, especially Antoinette for two amazing years of dedicated service and love and devotion. Pat is survived by: Two attentive sisters, Mary Glass with son Brad and Janice Griest with sons Wayne and Donnie. Pat's daughter, Dessine with children: Dalson, Shyla, and Triston, with grandchildren McKenna, and Ariella. A son, Shane with Erin and son, Luke. He has a loving nephew, Joey III with daughter Katie and son Joe IV, and an over-protective niece Robin with sons Austin and Marc. Pat's last decisions: Not to have a viewing because if you wanted to see or call him, you already did. Thank you. To be cremated and have his ashes spread in his 28-acre woods by his 30-year hunting partner and admiring step-son, Mike. To continue having our annual family celebrations as we gather in love and fellowship supporting each other in our challenges and decisions in life with God's help. Pat surrounded himself with happiness and laughter, so when Pat left with his wit and joy, we believe he is now sharing his jokes with God, family and friends who haven't heard the newest jokes. Unknowingly, Pat is united with his brother and best friend, Jack, who arrived in Heaven one month earlier than Pat. They never competed but always joined each other in all endeavors; this is amazing! As Pat is led closer to heaven holding on to the hand of Jesus, he will hear the loud singing of "welcome home" and receive his ?rst embrace from Candice, his ?rst grandchild, as she shouts out her pet name of "Happy Pat". Pat is now smiling as he enters his eternal home with God and family.
