Thomas Warner Obituary

Tom Warner Thomas Tomkins Warner, 67, of Boulder, Colo., died suddenly on May 30, 2011. Tom will be missed by his wife, Susan Warner; a son, Cory Warner (Chris); and grandson, Garrett Warner, of State College; and a stepson, David Lacklen, of San Francisco, Calif. Tom was a highly respected senior scientist in the Research Applications Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado. He was passionate about his research and dedicated to his students. After earning a B.S and two Masters' degrees from The Pennsylvania State University, and serving in Vietnam as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Meteorology from Penn State. He was the author of two atmospheric science books used by universities around the world: "Numerical Weather and Climate Prediction" and "Desert Meteorology." When he wasn't traveling around the globe for work, Tom was content pottering in his idyllic yard and vegetable garden. Even after 18 years of marriage, he and Susan met daily for lunch at the Brewing Market, followed by a stroll through McGuckins Hardware. Condolences can be sent to cristmortuary.com.

Tom was my thesis adviser at Penn State. He saw potential in me that even I couldn't see. He kindled my interest in numerical weather prediction which led to my career with NOAA. I will miss him.

What a shock to hear of Tom's passing. I just could not believe it when I heard and immediately thought of you. I hope you are holding up. I know how much you will miss him. Reading all these messages, I know he was greatly loved. I hope this gives you some comfort. I can't go to Vic's now without thinking of his smile and friendly hello. Good luck, my friend. You were, and always will have been, one of the best professors I ever had. I'll remember you always for the joy and energy you put into every moment of your life's work.

Best of luck on the journey ahead.

Susan,
I feel very sad for the lost. I feel lucky that I had the chance to meet Tom, and be his colleague, collaborator and friend. Beyond being a great scientist, he was for me a great teacher/mentor, mostly because of his kindness and modesty.
You know, I keep using his new book, and sent him mail a few months ago about how much I enjoy it, because it was written for students, and not to show how much he knows. He made it so interesting to the readers. He answered me, saying how important it was for him to hear these things. He was so modest.

We are deeply sorry. He was very nice person. we were in Cyprus last month. He was young and energetic for teaching us.
We had plans for the future workshops.
I wish condolences to the world of science

I had the pleasure of participating in the excellent workshop that Tom facilitated last month in Cyprus. He was a master of his trade, and his love of meteorology was surpassed only by his ability to teach and share his knowledge. I was honored to receive a copy of his book, together with his personal dedication. May you be comforted by the knowledge that his wisdom survives him in all the students he touched

Susan

I am a member of the Warner family through my marriage to his cousin, Jim Warner. I lost Jimmy six years ago so I know something of what you are experiencing. His death was very sudden also. Even though the Warner cousins have not been very close and have taken their separate ways, it is sad to know of another sudden loss. I talked many times with Aunt Dot and Uncle Tom about the family and they were so very proud of Timmy's accomplishments. You have my deep sympathy and best wishes for supportive friends to help carry you through this difficult time.

I used to trail ride with Tom on his horse in State College. She was very smart and Tom loved her so. He was going through a difficult time and she was a great comfort to him.

Susan, I met Tom when I was a young assistant professor at Penn State. He gifted me his NWP notes when he moved to Boulder - then I had to send them out when he started teaching there! He was a great senior colleague and a great guy. My thoughts are with you at this time. Take care.

We are so sad to learn of Tom's passing, and our thoughts are with you during these difficult days.

We met Tom when we were students at Penn State, and we have known him over the years as a warm, kind, and gentle man. Several years ago, we were thrilled when our son enrolled in Tom's Desert Meteorology class at CU -- a second-generation student.

Tom will be missed by his friends and colleagues and will be remembered by us all.
