Wayne, David and I send sincere condolences to you. We recall an enjoyable afternoon with you two on our deck in Eastham on Cape Cod a few years ago. Julie was a good friend from our time at UNC Greensboro and then after we transferred to a Chapel Hill. Her keen intelligence, heartfelt commitment to social justice and her great good humor are my abiding memories of Julie. Heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Julie was such a wonder- smart, funny, lived life fully, enjoyed her family, friends and colleagues. I went to high school with Julie and we were roommates our first year in college...my only complaint was that she kept hitting the "snooze" button instead of getting up in the morning! We got to visit a few times through the years when her work and her daughter's soccer brought her to Colorado. Julie was also the sweetest with my Mom in Florence and they spent several wonderful hours together during the reunion weekend. My love and condolences to all of Julie's family.

Julie, Susan Grimsley Spencer, Paula and I were seat mates in homeroom. We had way too much fun at Mrs. White's expense. We so enjoyed reconnecting with Julie at our 50th reunion this past June. Our sense of loss is heavy. We wish her family our heartfelt sympathy.

I don't have enough space to write all the things that matter about Julie's influence in my life. Needless to say, she always gave me time when I was a graduate student, and always danced the night away at Hot Spots gigs. More importantly, she always took the time to ask how I (and Nicky) were doing. Little things like that is just a small part of the kind of person Julie was.

My heart goes out to Julie's family, the world loses some of its sparkle without her. She was such an important figure in criminology, our field has lost a leader. Julie and I shared a love for a particular oldtime hot-dog stand in Greensboro, NC. I will eat a hotdog every year on her behalf. Terrie Moffitt

Julie was an extraordinary administrator at the University at Albany, SUNY, an imaginative participant in community-university social justice programs, and a wonderful friend to so many of us who were her contemporaries in the great city of Albany, NY. Her death is an enormous loss to the field of criminal justice, and also to her family, and the many circles of her colleagues and friends throughout the United States and the world. We will miss her.
