Serafino Mazza Obituary

Serafino Paul Mazza Jr. November 7, 1930 March 9, 2013 Serafino Paul Mazza Jr. died suddenly on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at The Hershey Medical Center with his loving family surrounding him. He was 82 years old. Paul Mazza is survived by his beloved wife, Maralyn Davis Mazza; and five children, Laura Anne Mazza-Dixon, David Paul Mazza and his wife, N. Taylor McCall-Mazza, Virginia Marie Mazza and her partner, Theresa Vescio, Susan Margaret Van Etten and her husband, Robert Van Etten, and Serafino Paul Mazza III and his wife, Sue Ann Beninsky Mazza. He was predeceased by his oldest son, Thomas Anthony Mazza, who died on March 10, 2001. The fifteen grandchildren who will remember his loving concern and passionate interest in their lives are Courtney Allyn Stachowski, Alyson Mansfield Mazza, Bethany Marie Dixon, Niven Paige McCall-Mazza, Alessandra Davis Stachowski, Danielle Witlin Mazza, Fallon Grace Mazza, Isabella Marie Stachowski, Lundun Davidson McCall-Mazza, Serafino Paul Mazza IV, Colten Van Etten, Joshua Martin Mazza, Tyler Van Etten, Serafina Hope Mazza and Madison Faith Mazza. Others in Paul Mazza's immediate family include his beloved sister, Rose Marie Stiffler, her husband, Michael Stiffler; and her children, Claudia Mitten Hon and Eleanor Sapiro Mitten. Paul and Maralyn's extended family includes his late brother-in-law, Donald W. Davis, his wife, Virginia Davis; and their children, Randall Davis, Deborah Kvam, Donald Davis III, Palmer Davis, Jennifer Heard and Ruthie Davis. Born on Nov. 7, 1930, in Cresson, Pa., S. Paul Mazza Jr. was the son of Italian immigrants. His father, Serafino Paul Mazza Sr., originally of Sersale, Calabria and mother, Vera Margaret (Runzo), of Cefalu, Sicily, were married in Cresson, in 1925. Paul Mazza graduated from State College High School in 1947. He studied accounting, history and philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1952. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1955. Paul married Maralyn June Davis, of State College, in 1954. They moved back to State College in 1956. He established a law firm with Ned Willard and Wayland Dunaway, which is now the The Mazza Law Group. His special concern for the elderly shaped his career as a lawyer. His concern for the needs of farm families led to his formation of the Pennsylvania Farmer's Association Legal Service in 1972. Paul served as well on the State College Planning and Zoning Commission, and many other community boards, most spectacularly the Central PA Fourth Fest Fireworks Committee. Of all of his accomplishments, it was South Hills School of Business and Technology of which he was proudest. In 1970, he and his wife Maralyn founded the 2-year associate degree school to meet the employment needs for highly-skilled employees in the area. Expanding now to four campuses, Paul's legacy continues with South Hills 6,000 plus graduates. On the first day of school, Paul shared his three most important philosophies with the new students by stating, "We will be nice to you, you will be nice to each other, and you will work harder at our school than at any other time in your life." Paul put his students first, any time that he passed a student in the hallway he would say, "Is there anything I can do for you today?" Paul truly considered his students, his faculty, and his staff part of his family. In 1990, Paul started the tradition of Sunday afternoon Music Picnics on the State College campus of South Hills. Enjoyed by young and old, these free concerts feature local musical talent and lemonade for a penny. The tradition will continue as it enters its 24th year this June. Maralyn and Paul Mazza have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others by being interested in each person who comes across their path, and making themselves available to assist those people in any way they can. In 2012, Maralyn and Paul Mazza founded the Mazza Foundation for Education, a non-profit organization devoted to creating opportunity for students through scholarships, nurturing social responsibility and advancing educational innovation. Paul's love for his family was boundless. He and Maralyn loved nothing more than gathering on the coast of Maine with all of their family and friends. The bonds they formed in Jonesport, a small fishing village on the hard-scrabble coast of Maine, carry on to this day in his children's and grandchildren's love for each other and the area. Paul was determined to share his Italian roots with his family. In 1988 he travelled to Italy with all of his children and has been taking several grandchildren to Italy each year ever since. The friends he met along the way are now part of Paul's ever expanding family. All who knew Paul know that baseball was his passion. After a 40 year hiatus, he donned his uniform once again and has played in the Center Sluggers League for the New York Yankees ever since. He was still practicing at the batting cage last month. Words cannot express the profound influence S. Paul Mazza Jr. has had on his family, friends and community. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, March 14, 2013, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Koch Funeral Home at 2401 S Atherton St, State College. A Mass will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church located at 867 Gray's Woods Blvd, Port Matilda. That evening at 6 p.m., a Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at the Nittany Lion Inn. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Mazza Foundation for Education at: Mazza Foundation For Education, c/o First National Bank, 2591 Park Center Blvd., State College, PA 16801. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.

Dear Marilyn and family,

Paul served as our family attorney (Kepler's in Pine Grove Mills, PA) for many years. He was always the highlight of the evening when out at our farm for dinner.

My mother (Betsy) and Paul's ongoing competition between the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish, was legendary:)

The man was the steward of honor and class! He was a very rare 'breed' in the arena of law and politics.

I pray that God gives you and your family the 'peace that passes all understanding.'

Love in Him,

Seeing the announcement of Mr. Mazza's passing took me back to 1956. I was a secretary in the law firm of Willard & Dunaway when Mr. Mazza began his career there. Mr. Mazza
Thank you for all you did for others through your years of giving and sharing of your good fortune. My family thanks you every day for the lives you have enabled us to have by sharing your life through your schools and by being there when I needed an ear. Three of the five members of my family attended South Hills. From the early 1970s through the turn of the century, you have allowed my family to enrich not only their lives but the lives of their families. Because of my life to be enriched by many of the great minds at your school, I have tried to pass along the things I learned by sharing with the many interns that have passed through my life that have come from South Hills. Paul, I don't want to cry, but I know you understand.
Thanks for all you did.

Mr. Mazza was a master at the little things. As I was walking the halls between classes one day, he asked how I was doing. I replied that I was not doing well. I told him I had a cold for two weeks with no signs of it letting up. He asked me for a piece of scrap paper and a pen. He promptly wrote down the name “Cold-eeze” on the paper and told me how well it had always worked for him. Thank you, Mr. Mazza, for making the world a better place one person at a time.

March 13, 2013

I have known Mr. Mazza since I was 5 years old as my mother Ellen's boss. As I have grown, as many do, I looked at certain men as a model of how I should live my life. Mr. Mazza was certainly one of those men. Even as someone that wasn't close with Mr. Mazza, I took away three elements of his life and character that I try to emulate.
1. Education is one of the most important pursuits you can have in life.
2. Don't be afraid to show your emotions and tell people every day that you love them.
3. Be modest and generous

If we could all live our life the way Mr. Mazza did, what a world this would be.

His living legacy will be the impact he had on everyone he helped, educated and inspired.

My family's thoughts and prayers are with the Mazza family.

God Bless

He'd say, "When my door is open, be sure to stop in and tell me about your day. I love hearing from our students." It didn't matter if he was on the phone as you passed his door, he would motion for you to come in. Even if it was to only say a quick hello between classes. He'd come have lunch with students in the cafe just to "catch up" with us. He taught us that we can reach our goals with hard work and determination to succeed! First of all, Thoughts and Prayers for Maralyn and family.

Mr. Mazza was an amazing person. One of a kind. A soft spoken humble man who provided so much to the entire community. The Founding of South Hills School & Technology gave the opportunity for a great education which changed my life and others forever. After graduating, I worked at the South Hills Building where I frequently saw Paul. He would always asked me how I was doing. He was truly a caring and loving person. Years later, Mr. Mazza helped me deal with a serious unexpected medical crisis. He knew what I was going through and he comforted me like a father. I will never forget his loving compassion.

Serafino Paul Mazza brought a positive impact on the community. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten by all of us.

The Mazzas are the reason I decide to pursue additional education at South Hills. Their kindness and warmth made me feel like I was part of their family. I wish the best for Mrs. Mazza and family. You are in my thoughts.

I am who I am because of Mr. & Mrs. Mazza and South Hills. He was such a kind man with a good heart whom I will miss dearly. He truly was a pillar of this community. To the Mazza family: May your cherished memories of him be a light in this dark time of sorrow. May God bless and keep you all.

I feel very honored to have met such a wonderful, caring man as Mr. Mazza. I attended South Hills from 2001-2003 graduating with an Assoc. Degree in EET. I have returnded to South Hills in 2011 and will graduate this June with an Assoc. Degree in Business/Admin. Accounting. This school truly is a "family" of all ages. I loved hearing Mr. Mazza speak his heart-felt words during orientation and my first graduation. He was a man that gave more love than anyone I've ever known. He made you feel so welcome in the school. My deepest sympathy goes to the entire family. I'm sure they will miss him the most. I've also had the pleasure of meeting his wife at school. She is a very pleasant, caring, strong woman. May God bless the Mazza family!

Never met a man in charge that could make everyone around him feel like they were part of the bigger picture. His whole family is a caring and loved member of the community, even here in Altoona.

I attended South Hills from 1993 to 1995, and later, my husband attended from 2002 to 2004. Paul Mazza was a very inspirational person... soft spoken, but very well respected by anyone who knew him. He made a HUGE impact on Central PA and my thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.

Mr. Mazza, Thank you for all you and your wife did for the students of South Hills, the community in which you lived, and the lives in that you touched! You are the true definition of a gentleman and a great inspiration to all who knew you. I will never forget when I graduated in 2006, after all the students had walked the stage and everyone was saying their congrats, you grabbed my son, who was 17 at the time, and cried with him because you were so proud of what all of us had accomplished. My son was crying, my mom and daughters were crying, my husband was crying and most touching was my father. It is one of the only times I have ever seen him cry and you brought that about. It meant so much to me that you took the time to come over to me and my family and say a few words and share your tears. You will be missed by many. Thank you for all you have accomplished in your life to help others in theirs.

I attended South Hills From 2004 to 2006, you never saw Mr. Mazza walking down the hall without a smile or saying hello to everyone he passed. The first day of school each year, Mr Mazzas speech would touch every person sitting in the room. What a great man this family and community has lost. Thoughts and prayers to everyone.

Mr. Mazza, you were a true gentleman. You were the light and spirt of South Hills and you will never be forgotten.

I first attended South Hills in 1993 and you were an inspiration to all those who knew you. When I came back in 2001, I was surprised (and pleased) that you remembered who I was. The world is a lesser place without you sir. Rest in Peace.

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget."

I knew Paul and Maralyn when I lived in State College. I had my own consulting business (Marlan Associates) and taught several classes for Paul and Maralyn at the school. They both are humble and dedicated people and educators. They were and will continue to be assets to education and the community. My deepest sympathy goes out to Maraly and all of the family.

I know that many will say it. Mr. Mazza changed my life. His passion for helping others is inspirational. His vision and willingness to pursue his dreams has had a profound impact on my life and on the lives of the students with whom I've worked.
What a blessing he has been.
