BRYAN, JR., Williams COLUMBIA - Dr. Williams McIver Bryan, Junior of Columbia died Tuesday, October 30, 2007. Memorial service will be held Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with interment in the churchyard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 8 p.m. at DUNBAR FUNERAL HOME, DEVINE STREET CHAPEL. Memorials may be sent to the Episcopal Church's Home for Children in York, S.C. 29745-1311 or to the charity of one's choice. Born in Savannah, Ga. on June 24, 1917, he was a son of the late W. McIver Bryan and Dorothy Simons Bryan. Dr. Bryan began the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Columbia in 1950 and restricted his practice to Gynecology in 1979. He was a member of the consulting staffs of the Baptist Medical Center, the Richland Memorial and Providence Hospitals and served as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Columbia Hospital (now Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital). Dr. Bryan was a member of local, state and national medical societies and was a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Life Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was past-President of the South Central Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and was a life member of the Medical University of South Carolina's Alumni Association. Dr. Bryan graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS degree, where he was President of the SAE Fraternity and the German ODK Club. He was a member of the ODK honorary fraternity and the KSK leadership fraternity and was head cheerleader. He was a member of Who's Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He was a life member of the USC Alumni Association and belonged to the Association of Lettermen of USC. He was a member of the Gamecock Club for 50+ years. Dr. Bryan did post-graduate studies at the University of Chicago and received a Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Memphis, where he was the Fred Adair Teaching Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Bryan served as Naval Medical officer in WW II and the Korean Wars. Dr. Bryan was Vice-President of the Sertoma Club of Columbia, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, the United Fund and was a member of the Committee on Maternal Welfare of the state of South Carolina. He was a life-long member of Trinity Cathedral, where he served as acolyte, Lay Assistant, Lay Reader, Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Every Member Canvas Committee, Assistant Scoutmaster and Vestryman. He was a Gold Palm Eagle Scout and was a Life Member of the National Eagle Scout Association. He was for many years a volunteer physician for the Columbia Free Medical Clinic and served the Washington Street Methodist Church soup kitchen. He was a Senior Member of the Forest Lake Country Club, member of the Columbia Ball and President of the Quadrille Club. Dr. Bryan was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati of S.C. He was first married to the late Anne Gantt Snowden of Charleston, S.C. Surviving are his wife, Blanche Jines Bryan; children, Williams McIver Bryan, III of Charleston, Thomas C. Bryan, II and his wife, Barbara McElveen Bryan, Barbara Bacot Bryan, James Simons Bryan and his wife, Janice Mandarini Bryan; and most wonderful grandchildren, Williams McIver Bryan, IV, Thomas DuBose Bryan, Jimmy Lee Turner, Williams Matthew Bryan and James Austin Bryan.
