Stanley Slavin Obituary

Stanley Slavin BLUFFTON, SC - Stanley Slavin, age 78, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at NHC Healthcare in Bluffton, SC. Stan was born July 19, 1933 in the Bronx, NY, the son of Jack and Fanny Slavin. He had a strong work ethic beginning at an early age working in his father's candy and newspaper store. In 1953 Stan served as a Combat Engineer in the Korean Conflict. Six weeks after being honorably discharged from the Army, Stan married the love of his life, Helen, on April 3, 1955. Stan went to Adelphi University getting his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education followed by his Master's Degree in Elementary Education. He had a 27 year career at Lakeside Elementary in Merrick, NY teaching PE, gymnastics and tennis. Stan made a life-long impact on the young lives he taught not only as a coach, but as a mentor relishing the opportunity to work with children at a young age helping them to develop life-long skills. Stan was a devoted husband to Helen and father to his two daughters, Linda and Karen. As a family, they enjoyed waterskiing and boating. Stan and Helen's family grew when Linda married Steven Mandel in 1984 followed by Karen's marriage to Rick Seidman in 1990. Sadly, they lost daughter Linda at age 29 to breast cancer when Linda and Steven's daughter Shari was only 14 months old. In 1992 Stan and Helen retired moving to Boynton Beach, FL playing tennis and enjoying an active social life. Unfortunately, Stan suffered a stroke in 2003 which led him and Helen to move to Bluffton, SC to be near family for support as Stan's health deteriorated In addition to his wife Helen of Bluffton, Stan will be deeply missed by his daughter Karen and her husband Rick Seidman and their daughters Stefanie and Nicki; and son-in-law Steven Mandel and his wife Debbie and their children, Shari, Lindsay, and Jared all of Mount Pleasant, SC. He will also be deeply missed by many other family members and friends. Visitation will be 3PM Tuesday, February 7, 2012 followed by the Funeral Service with Military Honors at 4PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1520 Rifle Range Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464; (843) 884-3833. Burial to follow in New York. Online condolences via McAlister-Smith.com.
