William Ashendorf Obituary

William Herbert Ashendorf CHARLOTTE - William Herbert Ashendorf, 72, died at home in Charlotte on July 29, 2012, after battling cancer. Bill was born on Nov. 17, 1939, in Atlanta Ga., the son of Rosalie and Isaac Ashendorf. The family soon moved to Charlotte, where Bill started school. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1957, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961, and the UNC School of Law in 1964. After serving in the US Army Reserves Judge Advocate General Corps, he began his law practice in Charlotte. In 1966, he married Linda Cabot. Their son, Jay, was born in 1968. After his mother's death in 1981, Bill joined his family's business, Southern Watch Supply Co., Inc. Years later, he opened a Sports Fantasy franchise in uptown Charlotte, a business that fit perfectly with his lifelong love of sports and sports apparel. After the family sold Southern Watch Supply, he semi-retired, while still practicing law. Bill was active in the Charlotte community. He served as president of the congregation of Temple Israel, as a board member of the Charlotte Coliseum Authority, and on many other local boards and groups. One of his proudest achievements in later life was helping found the Myers Park High School Alumni Association. The Mustangs, especially the Class of 1957, and the Tar Heels were among his biggest passions. He also had a lifelong love of music. He had a remarkable ear and could pick out virtually any song on practically any instrument. He was especially fond of the guitar and the harmonica. He also loved to tell a good "story" (that's joke to the rest of us) and had a vast reservoir of puns and one-liners. He had a kind soul and maintained lifelong bonds with many of his high school and college friends. He never met a child or dog who didn't love him. Bill was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his son Jay, daughter-in-law Erin, and beloved grandchildren, Lily and Isaac, all of Charlotte; his sister, Deane Boxer of Charlotte; his uncle Joe Ashendorf of Memphis, Tenn.; aunt Doris Citron of Tucson, Ariz.; aunt Sylvia Benrimo of Boston, Mass.; a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and cousins, whom he loved; and his granddog, Hershey. The family wishes to thank Hospice, especially Raven Sherrill, Chandra Ruotolo, and Julie Wirtel. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Temple Israel, 4901 Providence Rd., with burial at The Hebrew Cemetery, 1801 Statesville Ave. J.B. Tallent Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care-Charlotte Region, 1420 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204; Crisis Assistance Ministry, 500-A Spratt Street, Charlotte, NC 28206; or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Linda:
I am so very grateful for having known Billy, ever so slightly. He was such an involved caring person as you are also. I hold you in high esteem, and know you will be all right.

August 2, 2012

Linda,
Just a note to let you know how much I loved Billy. He was so very special. We had missed him playing golf in our every Wednesday game. He always added something special. Such as the time he was late for the teetime at Waterford Golf Course. He had missed the turn in Rock Hill and almost ended up in Columbia. And then there were the times when he would reach in his pocket for change at the end of a round and would pull out a wad of old credit card receipts the size of a softball, saying "it must be in here somewhere". And who other than Billy would bring two golf shoes to the golf course, both lefts? I could go on forever.
There will never be another like him. We have all been enriched by our association with him. And thanks so much for allowing me the honor of being a pallbearer.
Much love to you and Jay and Erin and Lily and Issac. What a wonderful family you and Billy created.

I knew Mr. Ashendorf when I worked at the courthouse as a paralegal. He was was always ready with a smile and his kind demeanor. Until I read the obituary I wasn't aware of what a rich and varied life he lived. Sad to learn of his passing.

Linda,

I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the funeral. Know that my thoughts are with you and your family as you cope with your loss. Billy was such a wonderful guy. I'm so happy that I was able to see him at Gillie's wedding last year. It doesn't seem right that he is gone. I will remember his wonderful, dry sense of humor and his love for you and the kids. I will always remember Billy. He was truly one of the "good" guys.

With the passage of time and of distance, memories of old friends, like old soldiers, pass away. Bill Ashendorf never fell into that category nor has his wife, Linda. I left Charlotte many years ago and did not watch Jay grow into manhood. With the parents who raised him, he is a young man I hope to meet some day. I grieve with the family and rejoice in the life of Bill Ashendorf,a gentleman and a friend in in every sense of the words.

Linda,
The first day I returned to work after Pete died you were standing in your office and you took a deep breath and you just looked at me and with tears in your eyes said, "Randi, I know you will have a happy life". You will never know how much you saying that has helped me through the years. And now, my friend, I say to you that I know it will take some time but you WILL have your happy life back! I just found out about Billy's passing this afternoon from Red Osborne. I love you and I'll be in touch.

I'll talk with you soon and know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I didn't know Billy well, but I figured it out today. He was a very special man.'

My love to you

Linda, Jay, grandchildren and extended family, my sincerest sympathies on the loss of Billy. I got to know Billy through his lifelong friend Phil Levine. There is a Greek expression at times like this that says "Zoe Se Sas" which loosely means a long life goes to those he left behind.

You have been a wonderful friend for so many years, and we will miss your being THE Myers Park High School Class of 1957 cheerleader so tremendously much. When we think of all the things you have done for your classmates and friends over the years, I know only one thing you did not do ~ and that was to ever speak unkindly about anyone. We will always love you, dear Billy, prince of basketball and of our hearts.
