Bradley Long Obituary
June 6, 2016 during a recovery diving mission. Born February 18, 1988 in Iredell County to Jerry Lee Long and Signora Little Long, his lifelong dream was to be a firefighter, following in his father's footsteps. Captain Long served the Newton Fire Department as Captain and was a Captain and longtime volunteer with Sherrills Ford?Terrell Fire and Rescue. Captain Long's accomplishments are many, most recently being named Newton Elk's Firefighter of the Year on April 30, 2016. Captain Long would, however, remind us that his greatest accomplishment was serving those in their time of need in his community. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Roy and Hattie Farve Long Sr., Gabriel and Mildred Lynch Little and Granny Lynch; uncle, William Bess, Jr. Those left to cherish his memory are: Girlfriend: Allyson Sigmon, Parents: Jerry and Signora Little Long, Brother: Chad Long and girlfriend Holly Hicks, Sister: Amy Long Shearer and husband Guy, Nieces: Natalie Signora Shearer, Hayden Katherine Long, Angel Rice, Makayla Hicks, Nephew: Trey Shearer, Colby Hicks, In addition, Captain Long is survived by the brotherhood of firefighters who stood together and supported their brother and his family and fire departments through this difficult time. A service to celebrate Captain Long's life and service to his community will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016
at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. View Baptist Church in Maiden. A private burial will follow the service. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 10 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Mt. View Baptist Church. It was an honor and privilege to have know you and briefly work along side you at Newton Fire and also to train with you at Conover Fire doing rescue specialties. You will forever remain in our hearts. Go Rest high on that mountain...Rest easy brother Captain Long...we'll take it from here...Gone but never forgotten

A friend informed me of a procession that was soon to pass by our office. I had watched the story on the news about a local firefighter that lost his life searching for a man that disappeared in the waters of Lake Norman.I was compelled to see this procession and a few others followed. In the distance I could see the large American flag gently swaying as it hung from the overpass.After the law enforcement escort, the ambulance transporting Bradley Long seemed to pass by in slow motion. A long procession of fire engines followed and I remember it sounded like ocean waves. I felt sad and proud for this man, his family and his friends and it became more personal to me. This man had lost his life because he was dedicated to the purpose of saving others.Aloud and without thought I said it reminds me of what Jesus did for all of us.

Thoughts and prayers daily. I'm so very sorry for your loss. May you find comfort and peace in God's arms. Bradley was taken way too soon, and we'll never understand why.. But know that he is now wearing a well deserved crown.
