Teddy Royal Obituary

Teddy Keith Royal
Teddy Royal of Charlotte, beloved husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, godfather, 'Con' and friend, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2011. He was truly the World's Happiest Person with the brightest smile and right now we imagine he's somewhere nice playing piano, fixing things, or helping somebody out.
Ted was born on May 8, 1958 in Fayetteville, NC. He attended Cape Fear High and graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University. He spent 30 years with Duke Energy and through his work had the opportunity to travel this country and worldwide, providing consulting services in Japan, South Korea and Brazil. He truly loved every bit of his work and we are grateful for the opportunities his dedication provided the family.
He is survived by his wife, Amy, daughter, Natalie, and son, Michael of Charlotte, NC; parents Emmy Lou and Earl Royal of Wade, NC; brother Randy, his wife, Robin of Hendersonville, NC and their children, Shannon and Ryan. He was godfather and uncle to Reece Miller of Leawood, KS; brother-in-law and uncle to Bruce and Paula Keizler of Santa Ana, CA and their children, Jeffrey and Stella; Bart and Diana Miller of Leawood, KS and their children Reece, Griffin, Ivy and Miranda; son-in-law to Jack and Meg Sturt, Glens Falls, NY; nephew, cousin, colleague and friend to too many more to mention, but please know that he loved you dearly and felt your love in return. Including our precious dog, Yogi.
'If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.' Jimmy V.
A Celebration Service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 8 at Providence Presbyterian Church, 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte, NC. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Ted K. Royal Memorial Choral Scholarship Fund c/o Providence High School Choral Boosters, 1800 Pineville-Matthews Rd., Charlotte, NC 28270.

Dear Amy, Natalie & Mike,
I am so sorry to hear that Teddy had to leave you so soon. I am Mike Edwards' mom and I understand the disappointment. I also understand the power of love - and it overrides everything. We saw you at track meets and concerts, and the love you shared as a family was always evident. Teddy's love of music is a seed that has sprouted within all of your hearts.
I have a story to share with you- one I shared at my little sister's funeral - one I think I knew in my heart when my dad passed, leaving 5 kids under the age of 15. Perhaps it will bless you.
Dragonflies begin their lives in the muck in the bottom of lakes and ponds. Their world is not crystal clear, it is in fact a bit muddy, but it is what they know. One day they have an undeniable urge to climb a reed - out of the pond. When they reach the top, their skin turns hard in the sun and they are sure this is the end. But, not long after, a crack appears in the shell. Beautiful wings erupt, and a dragonfly steps out into his new world. He carries colors in its wings and body like it had never seen before. His wings grow strong and he flies through the clear air (not muddy), and sees beautiful colors (reds, oranges...), colors he never could have imagined in the pond. He moves about effortlessly. He cannot return to the pond, he is a new creation, but he stays near the pond that holds the ones he loves. He looks forward to the time when he can share the freedom and new life he has just discovered. Love never fails.
With Love, Marilyn Edwards

Amy, I was shocked to read Ted's obituary in the Anderson Independent. I saw some Christmas pictures that you posted on Facebook just a little while ago and I said a little prayer for you, remembering your battle with cancer. I gave thanks for your good health and I felt so pleased to see how happy all of you looked in your Christmas pictures. My prayers go out to you again. I am just so very sorry.

Amy, Natalie & Michael...

Teddy was a member of the Cape Fear High School Class of '76; I, of '77. I got to know Ted [better] while being involved in planning the joint 25th reunion of the Classes of '76, '77 & '78 AND as graduates began working toward an alumni assocation and scholdarship fund. What really opened my eyes to 'the heart of the man' was when Ted offered to come to the 30th reunion of the Class of '77, all the from Charlotte and play the piano for us, upon learning that we had planned live piano music! And what a fabulous evening it was! Ted brought his own electric piano! Oh, and did he ever play! Before the evening was over, people were gathered around him singing! Not only did he play with a lot of heart and soul, he wound up quoting Shakespeare - along with someone else, no less! And you have to know: he had a few witty things to say, before, during & after as well!

Over the years, during the moments of fun & laughter, Ted spoke of his camping trips with you - his family, of his sports forays with his buddies, of the enjoyment of his work. Ted was without a shadow of a doubt, in my mind, "a Renaissance man!"

It is with a lot of love and a bit of a heart's ache, that on behalf of the alumni at our alma mater that I bid my friend, our friend, "the friend of CFHS," ado!

Teddy, "you're still the man!"

Always, always & always...

January 7, 2011

Amy, Mike and Natalie, we are so sorry to hear of Ted's passing. He was such a pleasure to be around and always had a great smile to offer! Although you have not been in our area for a while we are still missing a great member of the Stone Creek family! You are in our thoughts and prayers! We know he is smiling down on all of us now!
