James Wilson Obituary

James Clement Wilson CHARLOTTE - James Clement Wilson died peacefully in his home at Plantation Estates, Matthews on September 4, 2012. His wife of 70 years, Ann Spratt Wilson was by his side. Jim accomplished many things of note during his 94 years on earth, but remained a gentle and humble man. You might hear him brag about his family, but little else. And, there was much to tout. At the University of Tennessee (where he and future wife, Ann graduated) Jim was a track standout, son of a professor, and the president of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering before starting his career as an aircraft engine designer. During WWII, Jim left civilian life to pilot a B24 bomber for the Army Air Corps. When pressed, Jim could recount hair-raising tales of his plane crashes. The most dramatic occurred on his second mission of the war when his plane was shot down over Poland. We never heard a story with any boast about his skill and heroics even though he managed to save most of the crew in his crash landing. Foot problems that plagued him the rest of his days testify to the rigors of long forced marches through the German winter as a POW, but stoic, Jim Wilson neither bragged nor complained. Back home, Jim distinguished himself as an engine designer, test pilot, business owner, inventor and holder of several patents for textile machinery and waste heat recovery systems. Well into his 70s, Jim was called back from retirement by major engineering firms. His extensive expertise was needed for their nuclear waste disposal projects. Jim also distinguished himself as a founding member of the East Charlotte Rotary club, serving as their first president. Jim Wilson was man of strong Christian faith who lived his principles and taught by example. As a Deacon, Elder and teacher in the Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Jim inspired hundreds with his well-researched Sunday school lessons. In retirement, Jim continued to devote much of his energy to both church and community. At age 78 Jim was the oldest among the volunteers from MPPC traveling to Malawi to build houses. Jim Wilson leaves a legacy of love and respect that extends four generations beginning with Ann, his wife, best friend, and the love of his life. Their family includes four children and their spouses, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition, an extended family of nieces and nephews were very dear to Jim through his life. Immediate family is: Sarah Price and husband Bill, Marguerite Hankins and husband David, Conway Wilson and wife Ellie, Chris Wilson and wife Nancy. We miss you Pop. There will be a service to celebrate the long and wonderful life of Jim Wilson at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8th at Plantation Estates in Matthews. Memorials can be made in Jim's name to the Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity, or to Project Okurase at projectokurase.org.
