Garry Hill Obituary

Mr. Hill, 70, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2017, at The Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. The family will receive friends on Friday September 22, 2017 from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at McEwen at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC. A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Hill's life will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Newell Presbyterian Church, 1500 Rocky River Road, West, with the Reverend Fred Rose officiating.

Mr. Hill was born on November 3, 1946, in Rutherford County, NC, the son of Ed and Rachel Hill. He moved to Charlotte in 1955. He attended Garinger High School and played on the Post 9 American Legion Baseball teams that were runners-up for the 1964 National Championship and the 1965 winners of the American Legion World Series. Following his sophomore year at UNC-Chapel Hill he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves as their first round draft pick. When his professional baseball career ended, he became a salesman for Package Products/Sonoco-Engraph. After retiring he purchased On Deck Baseball/Softball Skill Development Academy where he and his sons worked to develop and train young people in the game he loved. Through On Deck, Garry operated a nonprofit organization to help provide less-privileged youth with a chance to pursue the game that gave him so much.

Garry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sandra Prophet Hill, three sons, Jason Hill (Janine), Kevin Hill (Kara), and Travis Hill (Susan); nine grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Sydney, Michael, Louis, Brody, Connor, Rae and Eve Hill. He is also survived by his brother, D. Eddie Hill (Dianne) of Durham, NC.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Kunal Kadakia of Levine Cancer Institute and to the wonderful caring people at Southminister Hospice House.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care at donatehospice.com or to BSDA at 10229 Rodney Street, Pineville, NC 28134.

Garry Hill - A great guy and a friend to me!
This gentleman & super athlete will be sorely missed by me & every person who knew him ever in his lifetime. I first met Garry when he was on the freshman team at UNC & pitched against my team at Louisburg College. I think I remember his striking out 21 of my guys & we were pretty good. (I'll just bet he & Coach Rabb are talking baseball right now.) The PBR has lost a great friend & colleague.

Clara & I send our sincere & heartfelt condolences to the family as you cope with your loss.
Blessings & Prayers,
Russ & Clara Frazier

Dear Sandra and family,
Garry was an inspiration to me personally and to many. He was a great team-mate and leader.....always willing to listen and help everyone. He was not only an inspiration in baseball; but also in the courage he showed as he battled cancer. Garry was one of the most notable people in Charlotte baseball history. My family and I share your grief and pray God's comfort for all of you.

Dear Sandra and the sons. I was so hurt when I heard about Garry. Garry to me was large strong southern gentleman with a huge caring heart for people. The youth baseball community expanded because of his love of the game and coaching.
For sure he will be missed.

Dear Sandra, boys and family,
My dearest, warmest sympathy. Garry was as fine a man as I've ever known. We always enjoyed being in his company. Christy said he was in her thoughts last evening as she attended a long planned Braves game. I fondly remember watching Garry and the guys playing softball years ago, and the complaints that our team had a ringer with Garry on the team. Much love,

Garry was my hero. As a younger cousin of 7 years or so, Garry helped me many times without knowing it. I as a Little League Player thru my years of playing the Next Level, (including Charlotte Park League Baseball) I was always recognized as "GARRY HILL'S COUSIN"! I was almost as famous as he was, in my small group of peers, as the City of Charlotte embraced him as their Pride and Joy! He taught me how to throw a curve ball that was so effective that the first time I pitched a game I relied upon it and struck out 11 batters using that Curve Ball! Many years later Garry and I were Pall Bearers at our Aunt Lily's funeral. As I sat beside this wonderful, gentle Giant, he sobbed openly. I last saw Garry at my mother's funeral, (his Aunt Gladys England) and I was so proud to introduce this fine man to everyone that I sometimes forgot what I was doing! Although that was one of the most recent times of seeing him, I promise you that he Still Is My HERO and always WILL BE!...He will forever be in MY HEART!

God Bless You Sandra and Family, he was and still is a GOOD MAN.....

I would not be where I am today without Garry. He helped me realize my dream of playing ball in college and I got hired for my job because I was an athlete in college. Thank you Garry for all the help you gave me and to the amazing On Deck family you helped create.

Prayers for the Hill Family in a time of great loss. But comfort can be found that His Legacy will live on. His work will continue through his Sons and family and I doubt he would want to change a single thing!

His curve ball was the best. I faced him only one time and I fell out of the batter's box when he threw it. From what I've read here he must have been a great father. Everybody knew of Garry when I was growing up in Charlotte.

I saw Garry pitch for the Braves against the Southern League All Stars at Griffith Park in 1967. I met him a few years when he joined some of his fellow Garinger Alums at Riverview Inn. It was a pleasure to have met him. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Hill family.

We pray that God will give you peace and comfort and help you to focus on the beautiful memories. We love you.

While I never met Garry, he was a baseball idol of mine. As a 12 and 13 year old, I followed those Post 9 teams as I did my favorite major league teams. He was a great player, and he motivated me always to continue to improve my game, because I wanted to play for Garinger and Post 9 one day. I was able to realize those dreams, and later play in the ACC. Garry obviously was a man of great character as I read through these testimonies, and that makes me doubly proud to know one of my idols was much more than a baseball player!

The McGee & Kenley family send our thoughts & prayers for the Hill and On Deck family. Garry's love for baseball & the players was evident when you were around him. You could see his passion in the big smile he had on his face when you were around him. His legacy will continue through his family and all the many boys he has coached & helped. May you all feel God's loving arms wrapped around you giving you the comfort and peace only He can give.

Heaven has gained another angel that loves baseball and helping others. He was truly an ambassador of America's game and left his footprints on many hearts, including mine. It was an honor to know him and coach his son. Garry was forever humble, gracious, and always greeted me with a warm smile. My sympathy and love is extended to Sandy, Jason, Kevin, Travis and their families. The world is a better place because Garry Hill pitched a "perfect game" in the game life.
