Ken Akers Obituary

Ken Akers
Ken Akers, a dear friend and talented writer, passed away suddenly at his home in Charlotte on June 1, 2011. He had written his own obituary, which he had given to a close friend for safe keeping. His words are written below.
'Ken Akers kicked the bucket on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at his home in Charlotte, N.C. He was old. So old he remembered black and white television, gas for 10 cents a gallon and Mickey Mantle's rookie season.
'He wasn't doing anything particularly strenuous - or creative - when he left this earth to be reunited with his cat, Iris, and meet the Almighty. Evidently, it just was his time.
'Ken was predeceased by his father, Rudolph, who died in 1992 and his mother, Mercedes, who died in 1989.
'Akers was a hopeless romantic and a hapless husband. He was married twice. Neither marriage produced any children or any particularly fond memories. A curious man in his old age, Akers presided over a dusty home filled with neatly arranged books, awards for his occasionally coherent writing and a disconnected TV.
'During his working career, Akers sold shoes and insurance, was Mr. Music on Romper Room and worked at a bank. After he retired the first time in 1997, he started his own communications company. Its most notable achievement was that it remained solvent until the end.
'Akers was raised a Catholic, but soon after he reached the age of reason, he excommunicated himself. While somewhat believing in 'someone or something that somehow started everything moving and kept it all more or less on track,' Akers did not attend church in his later years. He contemplated Buddhism but, with his bad knees, couldn't kneel long enough to satisfy the meditation requirement.
'Donations in his memory may be made to Alzheimer's, cancer research or to your favorite disease.
'Akers will be cremated and his cremains sprinkled into Lake Erie near Kelleys Island.
'Akers was a good listener and an OK dancer. He always wanted to be taller. And when he got older, he wished he had his red hair back.
'He just tried to be a nice guy.'
Ken left behind his sisters, Janet (Larry) Annett and their children David and Elizabeth, and Carol (Al) Lloyd and their children Christopher and Ben. He also leaves many friends in the theatre and production community.
Ken spent many hours volunteering with Collaborative Arts in putting on Shakespeare on the Green, and with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce in staging the Annual Meeting. Ken's dear cat, Juliet, has been lovingly adopted by friends.
A short memorial service will be held 2:00pm, Sunday, June 12, 2011 at North Carolina Dance Theatre, 701 N. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202 (parking in the rear) with a reception to follow at Alexander Michael's, 401 W. 9th St., Charlotte, NC 28202, from 3pm to 5pm.

I wish I had known Ken. What a great guy. Best obituary ever. He was real and he was here!

June 13, 2011

I knew Ken only from a distance, when we worked for First Union at the same time, and he was in corporate communications. I remember being struck by his genteel nature and quick wit in the very few interactions we had. We need people like him. Thanks to you, Ken, to your family and friends, for all you gave us while you were here. Smiles, and kindness, go a long way.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Akers when he brought Juliet in to our Animal Hospital. He always made a point to remember our names and ask us how we were doing. I will miss seeing him come in with Juliet but take comfort in knowing she provided him with wonderful companionship as he did in return for her. He was truely a genuinely nice person and I am very glad I got the chance to know him.

Ken could look as serious as anyone and break into a smile a laughter quicker than anyone. He was a great friend, excellent listener and trusted confidant through the years. I have many memories of Al Mike's, the roof at the Poplar and other places around town. Miss you, buddy. (Nancy Holland, Alexandria, VA)

Ken, you took a rain check on our last dinner plans at Al Mike's because you needed to learn your lines......knowing how conscientious you were I happily understood and planned to wait and meet after a performance, sadly I didn't get that opportunity...........to be sure you are greatly missed.

Ken took me out on the best date I've ever been on. It lasted four hours and we talked, laughed, ate great food and had lots of wine. He was the kind of friend who knew how to pick you up when you were down and make you feel very special. Summer and The Green will never be the same without him. The world has lost a special man and heaven has certainly gained one. My bet is that he's up there conferring with Shakespeare as we miss him here.

I wish I had done what Julie did and gotten together with Ken....I'd been meaning to do it for forever. Ken, I want you to know that I've learned my lesson, but I'm sorry it was too late for us to raise a toast.

Ken, you always knew how to interject humor when it was most needed. I am so grateful to have called you one of my
closest friends, and certainly
one of the wittiest, creative and
caring people I ever met.
You will be missed more than
you'll ever know.

Ken was a dear friend to many, many people (as evidenced by the outpouring of love for him over the past week). He was a very giving friend who always put us ahead of himself. This wonderful obituary is such a perfect glimpse into who he was and how we will all remember him. Rest in peace, Ken, and thanks for all the great times!

I can't express how thankful I am that Ken and I stopped "talking" about getting together and finally did, only a few short weeks ago. We shared a bottle of wine on my rooftop deck overlooking the uptown skyline. What a wonderful memory and a wonderful friend he was. Such a sad day.Love and prayers to his family.
Blue skies,

Ken gave me away at my wedding in Las Vegas. I look at his face everyday in a wedding photo on my desk. He was a wonderful man. He was so very good to me when I was desparately looking for a job. He took a chance on me and I will always be grateful to him. Even though I had not seen him recently, he was always in my thoughts. He will be sorely missed by so many friends. Alexander Michaels will never be the same! Love you Ken.

Ken, no one could have penned a better obit than you! I went on a run this morning at Elmwood and thought about the many walks we took together there. I miss you every day.
