Sincerest Condolences,
Mary Elaine Sigmon Nelson
August 16, 2013
Dr. Cunningham and my father, Charles B. Sigmon (principal of Winterfield Elementary), worked together in Charlotte-Mecklenburg for many years and were great friends. Gwen was the personification of grace, beauty and intellect. She was always so kind to everyone and made each person feel valued and special. I remember visiting her at her home after a death in her family. She was dressed in the most beautiful black dress I had ever seen. Her posture and speech were always impeccable and she was so dignified and refined. The "C" in Cunningham should stand for class, which she exuded in everything she touched. She also had a wonderful sense of humor. She came to my paternal grandfather's funeral and, as she walked through the line, told my grandmother that she was my daddy's "brown sugar." The entire room howled! We all loved her so. She is in heaven now with all of the other great educators in this state who paved the way for all of us, talking about "school" for sure.
When I was an adjunct at Barber-Scotia, she was such an inspiration and helped to mold me into the English instructor that I am today; I have been in the NCCCS for over 20 years now. Gwen was one of the "velvet rocks upon whom all others stand." My sincerest gratitude to her and loving condolences to her family.

As a member of the Davidson-Osborne contingency of the family, I was so very blessed to hear the many inspiring Christ-honoring tributes to my cousin. She truly exemplified that wise old saying, "Only one life, t'will soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last." Thank you, Gwen, for letting your light so shine that men were able to see and experience your good works, to the glory of our Heavenly Father and of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the family of the late, great Dr. Gwendolyn D. Cunningham. While I never had the privilege and pleasure to sit in her classroom, there's no doubt I was one of the many students she's touched and I'm grateful to have been so lucky. Rest In Peace Doc.

May she forever rest in Peace. Mrs. Cunningham opened several doors of opportunity for me upon my graduation at Barber Scotia. She got me and several others a job at Stonewall Jackson in Concord. I had given up on that job and she took me by the arm and said I got connections. Two weeks later, believe it or not I was employed there. Thank you for your time and everything you done for me and my family. May God bless your family.

Soror Cunningham was a wonderful woman; I loved her. I frequently sat in her rocking chair at Barber-Scotia and talked to her for hours. She influenced me to date a wonderful man...who I have been married to for 18 years. She reminded us to drink at least 12 cups of water a day, a lady should never chew gum, and advised me to use my birth name at all times instead of Micci. She was a part of some of my most fondest years spent at BSC, my deepest sympathy to her family and friends. She was truly a blessing.

In this world god puts people on this earth to be guiding lights for others...Dr. Cuningham was a my guiding light, when I left BSC I lost touch with her, but her touch on my life will be forever....My deepest condolences and I will miss her greatly, I would not be where I am without her influence in my life as an educator and as a surrogate "mother" and Professor as I attended BSC

In 1955 I was one of many students who started their education at Double Oaks Elementary School. Even at that age we knew who was in charge and we knew that she loved us all. Unbeknown to us at the time she helped set the foundation not only for our education but also for our lives as adults no matter what paths we chose. We will always remember the stately lady who roamed the halls employing us to get to where we were suppose to be and to do our very best.
To the Davidson/Cunningham family you are in our thoughts and prayers.
