I am nearly 10 years late, I´m so sorry to hear of Mr. Jones, passing. He was my professor at NEIU and I learned so much from him and his classes. He said "never believe anything I tell you until you´ve checked it out with your own good thinking." That is literally my philosophy for working with students now in higher ed. What a great person, it was an honor to know him! He gave great advice and truly cared for his work and others. Sending hugs to his family and friends! Mr. Jones, I will forever remember you.

We have nothing but fond memories of the times we spent with David. We first met when we volunteered to lead tours for Friends of the Chicago River in the late 80's. David was always an old school gentleman and a person who enjoyed good stories (his own and others). Sadly, we neglected to keep up our contact with David as we moved on to other things in our lives. David's passion for life made him a truly special person in our eyes. We know that those who knew him better and spent more time with him must be taking this loss very hard, but all of our lives have been enriched by our association with David.

David was a good friend, and I will miss his wonderful, sweet spirit. He suffered a long time, yet always had a smile. My sympathies to those he left behind.

I am so very sorry for your loss. David was one of the kindest, most spirited people I've have the pleasure of knowing. He will always be my favorite professor, as his classes were always lively, interesting, and unique-- just like him! He mentored me during my time at NEIU and no matter how busy he was, he always took the time to answer my questions, help me brainstorm, give me advice, connect me with other people who could help me (whether with projects or my career search), and overall just supported me and shared his knowledge and passion. One of my fondest memories of David was entire 2010 trip to Belize, where I got to see a whole new side of him. As always, his passion, kindness, and enthusiasm was contagious, and this trip would not have been the same without him. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to know David!

Your family will all be in my thoughts and prayers, and again, I am so sorry for your loss.

Warm regards,
Lauren

David Jones' "Chicago River Issues" was the best class I've ever had. He truly loved nature and shared that with his students. In addition, he encouraged individualism and creativity in final projects that spanned science, adventure and song. Blessings.

A bright light has gone out of this world, and the only solace is that all the things that have been illuminated through the years, Dave's family, friends, acquaintances and his deeds will remain to preserve his spirit. As is usual in these situations, words fail. My heart and condolences go out to his wife Jayne and all his family and friends who grieve for him. To me, Dave was a true Mensch, someone to admire and emulate; someone of noble character. He was also not someone who shied away from adventure and pursuit of new things. In some unfathomable way, our lives were intertwined and remained so. He was among the friends whom I have been with the longest. We grew up in Canton together and Dave's mother and my mother knew each other. We went to the same schools together, were in plays together, knew the same kids growing up. Our paths diverged somewhat when he went to Colgate and I went to Brandeis. But not for long. I remember one summer Dave and I and our friend Steve were back from college and bored out of our minds in Canton. Soon weird things started happening. Dave would get mysterious notes left on his car such as if you want to know what this is about, appear in the Post Office at noon. I will be carrying an umbrella in one hand and a white glove in the other. Of course no one showed, but the notes kept coming during the summer. Dave, Steve and I went to some lengths to unravel this mystery but during the summer were never able to. Finally as we were to go back to school Dave confessed he had made it all up to entertain us. And entertain it did!
I remember one year Dave visited me at Brandeis. Dave was in the Peace Corps; I was in the Peace Corps. There was some weird symmetry in that he grew up in a Methodist family, I grew up in a Jewish family he married someone who grew up in a Jewish family, I married someone who grew up in a Methodist family. Oy veh! When I spoke to Dave recently I told him I regretted never having met his kids and that he hadn't met mine. Jayne corrected me and said he had met mine, and indeed he had. My wife confirmed this. So much for memory in one's 70s. But whatever else I forget, I will not forget Dave. My life is better for him and the world is better for him. To Jayne, Dave's family and his friends, you have my deepest sympathy for such a loss. May he remain in blessed memory.
