Madeleine Cronin Obituary

Cronin, Madeleine Easter 94, of Western Springs, Illinois passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013 in her home surrounded by family and loved ones. Family was the foundation of her life and she expressed an abundance of love and compassion to those closest to her. Born April 20, 1919, in Portland, Maine to the late John Edward and Corinne McGahey, she grew up in Portland and graduated from South Portland High School. She went on to graduate from Northeastern Business College and was a member of Beta Phi. After graduating from Northeastern, Madeleine was offered a job with the Socony Vacuum & Oil Company in Cleveland, Ohio. While at work one day, in walked the love of her life, Phil Cronin. The two were married September 18, 1943 in Portland, Maine and soon welcomed four beautiful girls into their family. After living in Maine, New Jersey, and Chicago for a short time, the Cronin's built their dream home in Western Springs, Illinois. She and Phil enjoyed traveling across the country and to Hawaii. The two spent many summers in New England with their family and dear friends. Madeleine loved to cook and entertain guests in their home. A voracious reader, she loved biographies, history and love stories alike. She enjoyed needlepoint and playing bridge with her friends and spent many Sunday afternoons at Drury Lane theatre followed by dinner. Her family often joked her social life was busier than theirs. She was a founding member of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Western Springs and remained active with the Women's Club and Seniors Club at St. John of the Cross. She was a member of La Grange Country Club for 37 years. And as she might have said, she is eternally "passable." Surviving family members include her four daughters, Suzanne C. Comes and husband Lawrence E. Comes, La Grange Park, IL, Nancy Clark and husband Richard Clark, Ozark, MO, Michelle P. Pallastrini and late husband Roger Pallastrini, Monterey, CA, Patricia M. Casey, Downers Grove, IL. She is also survived by nine, beloved grandchildren, Christopher and Paul Comes, Julie (Clark) Ott and Jamie (Clark) Mueller, Jacob Pallastrini, Tom, David, John and Michael Casey as well as her two great-grandchildren, Will and Hannah Ott; and niece and nephews, Pamela (Quinn) Greaney, John Quinn and Walter Quinn. Preceding her in death was her husband, Phil Cronin and sister Pauline Quinn. Friends and family will be received on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Hallowell and James Funeral Home, 1025 West 55th Street, Countryside. Prayers Friday, December 27th 10:45 a.m. from the chapel to St. John of the Cross Church in Western Springs where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:15 a.m. Entombment Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial Contribution may be made to the American Cancer Society of Chicago and Wellness House of Hinsdale, Illinois. Funeral Home Phone: (708)352-6500

Aunt Madeleine ( Maddy) was truly a gift to the Quinn clan. Her quiet and loving dignity has been a guiding light and a source of strength for many decades and several generations. Aunt Madeleine is greatly missed.

Dear Suzanne and Patti,
To your entire family, my sincerest sympathy on the loss of your Mom. She was such a gracious woman; I have many memories of her and your Dad. I'm sorry I didn't see you at the funeral home this evening; you all had just left. I was able to pay my respects and smiled for the last time at your dear sweet Mom. May God bless your family with many wonderful memories and may she rest in peace. My love to all (especially your boys, Patti!)

I have only known "Aunt Maddie" through the adoring eyes of her niece -- Pamela Quinn Greaney -- and brief chances to meet this true lady. She had such grace and warmth, with a vibrant intelligence that shown in the gleam of her bright eyes. Your loss is her final blessing: She has passed "through a glass darkly" to where the light never ends; going home before you, joining a grand reunion, biding endless time until you meet again. Here, as we enjoy holy nights, surely a bell is ringing somewhere as a new angel gets her wings. It was a wonderful life.

December 22, 2013

My sincerest condolences to you all for your loss. I deeply regret that I will never get to know her. But she will live on through all the souls she touched during her 94 years. God speed Madeleine. Safely rest. --Jim Bradley

Dearest Cronin Family
Thank you for sharing your mother with us. She held herself with dignity, like the Queen, and allowed us to enjoy her glow. Her attention to detail and follow-up with prior conversations was remarkable and complimentary. It was a privilege to have known her. Thank God for her legacy of family. I am sure she was very proud of all of you.

What a wonderful and rich 94 years! As her grandson, I had the privilege of learning from her and growing into a better person because of her. I was so fortunate to have her in my life - on the receiving end of a lot of good dinners, a patient and receptive ear, and a lot of love. Her passion for her family, for putting us before herself, and for serving others won't be forgotten. We will miss you terribly but do our best to celebrate you in our daily life.

From the first moment I ever met this wonderful woman, about 46 years ago, she made me feel so welcome into her house. She always remembered so much about me, and was interested in what I had been doing, how my family was without being prying. Mrs. Cronin, you see, was the genuine renaissance woman. A real lady. We will all miss her dearly.

I was such a lucky girl as I got to share 57 great birthdays with my Mom. Sadly she was tired and passed away, but she had 94 1/2 wonderful years of her life. Now she is with my dad celebrating again. Thank you for giving me and my children such beautiful memories that we will have forever.
