Percy Brown Obituary

On September 2, 2013, Percy Hamilton "Ham" Brown passed away. "Ham" was born in Charlottesville, VA on August 30, 1934 to Percy H. and Elizabeth P. Brown. He was raised in Hinton, WV. "Ham" attended Staunton Military School and the University of Virginia before being drafted in the US Army in 1954. He served in the Army in Germany from 1954-1956. Upon his discharge from the Army he returned to WV and attended Concord College, graduating in 1960. In 1961 "Ham" joined the US Secret Service and was assigned to the Washington Field Office. In 1962 he was assigned to Joseph Kennedy, returning to the White House detail in 1964. He was assigned to Presidents Johnson and Nixon. In 1970, "Ham" transferred to Chicago for eight years, returning to the VP detail under VP's Mondale and Bush. "Ham" retired from the Secret Service in 1981 and became a member of the Association of Former Agents, US Secret Service. He held every elected position except Vice President and was elected to Executive Secretary, a position he held for 17 years. In 1980, "Ham" joined AA and over these years tried to help others just as AA helped him. "Ham" is survived by his son, Col. Michael Brown, USMC, daughter-in-law Ellen, and their children, Houston and Jack; son Kevin Brown and his son, Spencer; and daughter Courtney Brown. Funeral arrangements are being made by Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA, with service to be held at the United Methodist Church of Annandale, VA at 10am on September 10, 2013, and burial to be held at The Quantico National Cemetery at 2pm on September 10, 2013. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Brown family. Hammy played QB for my father at Concord and was always a loyal alumnus. He lived life to the fullest and left many large footprints in his journey on earth. He had an edgy sense of humor, a big heart and never met a stranger. May he RIP.

I will always remember "Hammy" as a Big-Brother during our 2 years in the Phi Delta Pi fraternity at Concord College, 1956-58. I was just a 17-year old, dirt poor, bewildered Freshman and Hammy was the 22 year old Army vet, with his own car and lots of money from the GI Bill---and he watched out for me like an older Brother. Our paths did not cross but 3 times in the past 55 years---but I will always remember him for all the good things he did for me many years ago! He was truly a "Big Man" on the Concord College campus with lots of men and women friends---but he never forgot the many principles he was taught during his early years in Hinton. My prayers are with his Family.

My sincerest condolescences to the Brown family. I was assigned to the Chicago Police Department as a Policewoman back in 1974-1976, when I had the privilege of working with your father on a protection detail for Lady Bird Johnson. At that time, the Secret Service did not yet have female agents, to my knowledge, and I along with another policewoman had the honor of being assigned to the detail for a day. We worked with your father, who was in charge, and I will never forget his humor in explaining why we should just call him "Ham". He was truly a man of great service and well respected. I salute your father, as he was one of us also, as Sgt. Al responded. My prayers are with you for peace at this time of grieving.

Our team first met "Ham" while he was assigned to the USSS Chicago office and we were the Chicago PD downtown detail normally assigned to POTUS and other dignitary visits.
One of our favorite memories was when, after a host of speakers reviewed all the redundant details of a POTUS visit to Chicago shortly after a controversial action elsewhere on his behalf, "Ham" was then introduced as the keynote speaker.
He strolled up to the podium, and with that southern type drawl he stated..."Our main objective here today is to make sure that the principle leaves this here great City of Chicago with the same amount of pre-described holes as that of when he entered, Thank You."
Then he sat down.
So short, so distinct, so... "Ham."
Rest in Peace, our brother.
We were honored to have worked with you, side by side.
