My spouse Robin and I were law clerks to Justice Hartman many years ago, shortly after he joined the Appellate Court. His integrity, legal acumen and wonderful sense of humor were known to everyone around him, but working with him early in our careers was the best real-world legal education possible. He was a mentor in the finest sense: expecting the best from us, generous in making allowances for the inevitable lapses of youth and inexperience but gently insistent that we learn from mistakes and reach for his high standards in legal research, thinking and writing. With his passing we have lost a great jurist and an extraordinarily fine man. Our deep sympathy to his family.

Justice Hartman was not just a highly respected judge, but a wonderful person. I am glad I had the opportunity to get to know him better in the past few years, and feel his passing will leave a huge hole in both the Appellate Court and in many people's hearts.
